Do I have 5 or 6 gears on my car

Hi, I just bought a 86 firebird its a 305 and its a 6 speed(the seller told me). The owner said it used to be a v6.
He said that he left the stock manual transmition in the car. now I know how to drive and I can only find 5 gears?
I looked at the trans and it looks really small.
The fastest 5.0 in the state.
Do I have 5 or 6?
I am so happey again to have a third gen again.

Part of me hopes that you are kidding here...but most of me realizes that you are not...

If you can't find the 6th gear...it is because it isn't there! You have a T-5...

Ask the seller where the 6th gear is...after all, he promised, so it must be there

only payed 100 bucks for the car. It has over 20000 miles and the engine is smoken more then I do! LOL
The seller is in the army and hes gone. Thats why I got it for so cheap. Hes being shipped off.

This t-5 that you are talking about, It does have 6 gears?
And I heard that the t-5 is the strongest transmitions made by a lot of my freind. I am hoping for 11's on my 305 stock. I am a good driver and I think most people are slow in there 305 becasue they cann't drive like a mad man speed shifting like I do.
Thank you,
Shane

T-5...is 5 gears...hence the T-5...and not T-3 or T-6...

No...the T-5 isn't that strong...it supposedly can be made strong (only the World Class version) by a kit from G-Force...

Otherwise you are looking at a Tremec or a GM six-speed..

Do a search on the terms above and you will find all you want to know...

Good luck,

I emailed the seller. A family friend.
He says there is 5 gears and its a stock v6 trany, v6 rear end. Not even half as strong as a t5.
But can this thing hold up to my entence motor I should be pushing about 450 horse and 550 toque. On vortex 305.
I even cut a hole in the hood and put my K&N air cleared out side.
There is no way this thing has under 450 horse! Its a beast.
What type of clutch should I get then for the power! I want to see how long the T-3 tranny lasts.

I am sorry, I have no idea about modding a cars. THis is my first 3rd gen.
I've owned imports before this this and you could get like 100 horsepower by a muffler systems only.
On the 86 ta I have a 2 3 inch true dulls and that should count for a 100 horse apeice.
Or how much power do you think I have?

It's very hard to run a dual exhaust setup on these cars (notice I said hard not impossible). If you look under the car the only place that the pipes can be ran is under the passenger side of the car. The floor is even bent to have the clearance. You might beable to get 30 hp or so from a full out exhaust swap but I wouldn't count on it. 550 is a lot of tq pushing out of that little block. I'm building a 383 full out race setup (10.7 or 11.4:1 compression) and I'm looking at around 500 to 550 hp and probably 450 to 500 tq.

As for fastest 5.0 in the state... I kind of doubt it. We have some pretty fast cars in IL for being hicks.

I personally think the seller was blowing smoke up your *** so he could sell it.

Oh btw the my 350 TPI with k/n, msd, headers, catback, no cats, 3 piece underdrive pulleys, no smog, air foil, balanced injectors, 9.5" ACT stall and pro built 700r4 only put out 211 hp and 313 tq at the wheels. The dyno place said they normally see a 25% drop between fly to wheels on there dyno. So that puts me only at 264 hp and 391 tq. So I only gained around 20 hp and 50 tq over stock with all those mods.

fast86,

For some small reason, it comforts me slightly to know that you are just ignorant and not being stupid on purpose...

The seller is either SUPER ignorant or also just blowing smoke up your....

1. You don't necessarily need a dual exhaust as a 2.5" y-pipe to a single 3" pipe all the way back will get you into the 12s (1/4 mile times). With headers of course...

2. Cutting a hole in your hood and letting the filter stick out is ghetto...

3. I need some pics of this "BEAST"...can't wait to see if my car can even compare or not...

4. I would recommend just reading around for a while before posting...unless you have something directly to contribute...only because a lot of info is on the boards here...also, if you have a question, I strongly suggest that you do a "search" on it...there is a lot of info in the archives too...Good luck.

fireturd350,

That is pretty good actually...I am a fan of efficient torque convertors after seeing a lot of other people show great gains in drivability and some power gain to the wheels...so I got my own

To be honest...I just dropped the combo back in the car and it isn't running yet...probably in a few weeks...I am re-doing the entire brake setup and the front suspension as well (with my brand new Ed Miller C4 brake kit) ...so look for a post in the TPI section coming up for impressions, etc..

I looked at the AFR 210's and decided for the $$$ to go with my heads...I can get them ported in the future (like AFR does from the factory) and they should be great for my current combo...we shall see
