What trans would I need?
What trans would I need?
What's up guys? Well, I'm converting my '90 3.1 to TPI and adding a sdpc crate engine. So far, in mind, it's going to be this:
http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...=1577&pid=9009
Now, w/ that engine, what 700R4 would you recommend? I don't want to spend a fortune on it, but also want it to take what that engine can deliver.
Also, would my stock differential hold up to it? What would I need to do differently to it?
Thanks for the input/idea's!!!

I'll recommend a Pro-Built Street/Strip 700-R4. It can handle up to 550 hp, comes with a Trans-Go Shift Kit and a Vette servo.
I just installed mine 2 weeks ago and I absolutely love it. :hail:
Also, Dana was able to answer any and all questions that I had.

Would that trans be hard on shifts? I heard it shifts smoothly when you gradually push the throttle...but if you JAM it, THEN it shifts hard to chirp the gears...Is this true? I would find it somewhat annoying if when drivin' "normally", it would be shifting in a jerking manner.
Thanks!

Its not really hard on shifts...if it shifts below 3500-4000 RPM, you almost don't even notice it shift. However, if you hold the throttle a little harder and it doesnt shift till above 4k, then its pretty firm...enough to throw your head to the back of your seat if you werent expecting it. It is nice because if you drive it normally, it acts like a stock tranny or smoother. But its a whole different ball game once you get on the gas
Would I need to get any type of torque converter to go w/ that package? I don't know anything about them, and don't know what I would need if I had to get it. Any insight on that? Or, would I just get the trans and bolt it up right to the new engine? Or, does that trans COME w/ a torque converter?

Yes, you will need a 30 spline converter for the transmission. If you're interested in going that route, your best bet would be to call Dana @ Pro-Built and tell him the engine you are getting (have the specs ready...) and he will recommend the best converter to work with the engine and transmission.
Sounds good. I will talk to him and see what he says. That's probably the best bet I should go w/, correct? Should I get a trans cooler too? Different Trans mount? Or, could I use the one from my 6?

I would recommend getting a tranny cooler. They're relatively cheap and easy to install. Its just cheap insurance.
I'm pretty sure the transmission mounts are the same, so as long as its in good shape you could probably use it. But with the power you will me making, if the mount you have is stock, it is probably wise to invest in one that is stronger like an Energy Suspension polyurethane one from Summit for like $20.
