shift cable snaped, I think
has this happened to anyone else here? I was about to go to work and I started my car and when I went to put it in reverse I heard a kind of pop or snap noise. Now my shifter just moves freely, theres no tension on it. So now I cant drive my car because it is stuck in park. I'm pretty sure that it is the shifter cable that runs from the shifter to the transmission, if it is this does anyone sell a new cable or am I going to have to get my car towed to a shop.
by the way I have a 90 firebird 305 tbi with the 700r4 auto trans
(I'm about to drive this car off a cliff because of the amount of problems that I am having with it)

You can go to GM and get another cable. Probaly wont be cheap, anything from the dealer rarley is. But you could also go to a junk yard and get another one. Or I guess you could push it off a cliff, well maybe not,if you cant get it out of park.

auto zone has them, I have bought them before. I remember I had to bend the braket at the shifter on one because it was just a hair short

I've had 3 shift cables break, 2 of them the cable inside snapped and the 3rd one the sleeve broke away from one of the points where it connects to the shifter.

This happened to me this morning. I parked it in the garage after washing it last night. When I tried to put it in gear this morning, The shifter moved freely without changing gears. Bummer.
Is the shifter cable a nightmare to replace?

It isnt hard at all to replace. I just replaced mine a couple weeks ago. All you got to do is unhook it from the tranny and shifter and slide the new one back in place of the old one(easier said then done). It took me less than an hour. Its better to have someone help you. Good luck!

The end did pop off of the transmission- because the plastic disintegrated. I am glad it decided to let go in the garage after I put it in park.
I ordered a "shifter cable" from the dealer before I had a chance to figure out what had happened. They gave me the interlock cable. Apparently they call that the shifter cable. So I had to order the "range selector cable". That error set me back about 2 hours.
It's all fixed now!

go get a new one from the gm dealer. mine was $34. also a funny story to mine braking. mine broke on my firebird when shifting from park to drive in the mc donnalds drive thur. i had to run inside and tell them to stop letting traffic through. i was pissed and embarrased. they let em use their phone to call ym dad whos a mechanic and come pick it up with his wrecker.
