help please!

alright i have a 1983 T/A with a 700r4 automatic trans 305 crossfire motor. I was out driving the other day and put her down in first and got on it and the car made a grinding noise as i accelerated and i need to figure out what is causing this. I just had a new set of richmond 3.73 ring and pinion gears put in, its an open rear end, the gears are well broken in now so im hoping its not that. i also had a b&m shift kit put in the 700r4 at the same time. Now just today i put it in first and got on it and nothing happened at all i even layed out two nice tire marks on the ground, she couldn't have run any better. so im at a loss. hopfully you guys can give me some ideas and help me diagnose this problem. if you need more info about the car please let me know. thanks alot everyone.

Wasup Jeremy?

Was this grinding noise something you could feel, or you just heard?

Did the car still accelerate or sit there and make that noise?

You do know you're gonna catch hell on here for installing a B&M kit, and everyone is going to say "that's what caused it!!"

It may be a problem with the trans, but we can't jump to the conclusion that it's because of the kit.

I serioudly doubt that it was the pinion/ ring slipping. If it was, it would still be doing it.

More info please.

hmm, grinding noise, new gears, and your OPEN rear now lays 2 tire marks instead of 1?

im going to guess the prob is in your rear and is your spider gears.... but thats just a guess.

That's a very good possibility. They may have gotten cocked or shiftet out of alignment.

Go buy a PowerTrax and yank them suckers out of there

or atleast drain the oil and pop the cover off....

hopefully, it didnt trash the case or anything but the gears themselves...... if thats the prob.

allright well now it is consistantly grinding aj and you can deffinatly feel it. But its only when you get on it. it feels like the trans is jumping when you get on it could it be a messed up trans mount and yea i hear the b&m shift kit is ****. when the car hits second gear you hear a "clunk" so im think now the shift kit messed something up ..... aj i hope bobby has another trans for me cuz i dont think that this one will hold up with that 355 we are gonna drop in. so what do you guys think anymore ideas...

oh and aj i let gear master install the gear and shift kit so the way i hear bobby say they do **** work i think the shift kit they installed screwed things up. they told me that they had gotten a piece of the old gasket stuck in the valve body so it took them a couple extra days for me to get my car back from gearmaster so now i learned my lesson. do you think that shift kit is gonna screw my whole transmission or what??

hydric,

Please don't start this useless debate again.

I know 3 other guys with the B&M kit in 700-R4's and not ONE of them have a problem, including me.

Let's just leave it at that, OK?

Jeremy,

The only time I used Gear Masters was back in 1994. I had them swap a speedo gear and install a new speedo cable for me in the '74 Camaro I had at the time. I didn't have a clue about that stuff then, but they only charged me ~$100 including parts so I figured why not?

I was totally happy with their work, but it's not like it was difficult to do or easy to mess up either. Other than that I have NO experience with them, nor have I heard anything good or bad about them.

If you're suspicious that it's something they did, take it back to them and have them check it out.

whew AJ it wasnt as bad as i thought man. I put the car up on the jack stands and took a look under there. come to find out i did bust the transmission mount. so i let the car down and took a run over to winners circle and got a nice new polyurethane mount and went back to the house and put it on. no more grinding thank ***. thanks for all your suggestions and help everyone.

yay... glad it was a simple fix..... but what was hitting though? was the driveshaft smacking on the tranny tunnel or the TQ arm?
