Shifter **** Removal

Replacing carpet and need to remove center console. I cant figure out how to get the thing off. Its the black ball kind if that makes any difference.

it should just be threaded on. I've seen some get tight so you might have to give it some muscle.

If its an automatic, you have to pull off the button first. I used a pair of channel lock pliers to do this. After you get this off, there is a c-clip that holds the ball to the shift lever. Remove the clip and the ball should slide right off.

Uhhh... back when I had the stock auto shifter, all you had to do was remove the C-clip on the front of the ****, then pull on the **** while pushing the button and it would come off. I used to take out the platic thing inside as a cheap method of theft prevention.

HA! That's good cheap anti-theft... My c-clip wasn't seated properly - didn't even know it was there (smack!) so I had to make sure I didn't accidentally yank the stinkin' handle off the shifter every time I used it. Found the clip, said "Oops," and that problem went away...

Oh really? Maybe they changed them? On the shift **** on my 82 the only way to access the clip was to take the button out first....
