TH350 vs. 700R4

With my setup in the sig, I figure I'm putting up 440-450 HP. My stock 700 blew up on me, so I need a new one. Should I get the 350 or the 700 to replace it? What are the advantages each way? I like the cost of the 350 better, but I like the OD in the 700. One of the most important questions is which trans will make my car go faster down the track with a 3.73 gear, assuming I can hook up? I know I need more stall too, so don't figure that into anything. Also, will either one be able to handle a shot of nitrous if I decide to spray it next summer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

700s have a really nice 1st gear on them. 700s have the extra gear like you stated, which with 3.73's won't have to be used. I seen (In Hot Rod Mag) a 89 350 tpi do 1/4s in low 11s high 10s with 4.10 gear and only use 3rd gear.

700's will hold a lot of power if there built right. A lot of people think there junk in any form but that's not true. Pro-built warranties his 700s at 550 and 625 hp!

If you really wanted to go less wasted hp you could do a manual. I would say just do the 700 and take a look at www.pro-built.net

I would say it depends on how much you drive on the highway and 'need' overdrive. The th350 may make you a bit quicker and hook easier with it's 2.52 1st gear ratio(vs the 700r4's 3.06 1st gear ratio). Built right, both can handle quite a bit of power. I'd say it's 'cheaper cost vs. overdrive' You make the call If you need more strength go with the th400. I used to have a th350 in my 82, but I drive it on the highway too much (3.73 gears). 3000rpm at 60mph gets old after a while. With the 700r4 I run 2150rpm at 60mph

I was rushed earlier I'll also add that the TV cable is different on them.

The 700 the TV cable controls downshifts and fluid pressure. The 350 & 400 they only control downshifts which isn't a problem with a strip only car, since you'll be manually shifting it anyways probably.

Yes, but 2nd gear isn't so nice. The huge change in ratio from 1st to 2nd usually makes the engine fall out of it's powerband.

if its a daily driver, id get a 700, no reason to be greedy over a few 10ths of a second on a 12 sec car, and the 700 if made right would be plenty reliable, its only downsides imo are the price and the large drop in ratios from 1st to 2nd

if its a drag car or only like a weekend cruiser, get a th350, enjoy the better spaced gear ratios and if you wanna help compensate for the higher 1st gear, go crazy low on your rear gears, only downside, gas milage

All depends on your combo and cam too. My next motor is gonna be a 383 with 215cc AFR heads with a solid roller so I'm not really worrying about falling out of the power band.

It's not a problem with a steet car. The th350 uses manifold vacuum signal and the kickdown to do the shifting... Just fine on the street.

yeah, I was just stating that if he was going to use a 350 he could forget about the kickdown cable. Being one less thing to worry about doing. If I could I know I would get rid of my kickdown... I much rather just tap the gas do a little toe and heel action and manually downshift it myself.
