Little power to wheels during accelleration

Ok my buddy has a 89 Iroc and today he was driving and he said it started making a rattle noise. And he also said that the car moved very little when giving it gas. I was thinking maybe the torque converter? Like its not locking up? I have very little knowledge of an automatic transmission can anyone help us out? Thanks for your help

could be the torque converter.

start off by checking the trans fluid. both to see if it's filled properly, and what the fluid looks like/smells like.

thats what i was afraid of and didnt want to hear. I like to think more on the torque converter side since its a lot cheaper.

ya, but you gotta think on the reality side....if the engine is revving up and the car isnt going anyplace, its the tranny

ok update i drove it. When it starts up it acts like nothings wrong, no noise, no slipping! it happens after about 5 - 10 minutes of driving. but if you turn the car off and turn it back on, no problems. Anyone heard of this happening before?

i took it to a transmission shop and they said its the transmission. but he wants $1000 to rebuild it. Has anyone rebuilt their own transmission? It's a 700R4 i seen a master rebuild kit on ebay for $150 and it includes a converter. Im pretty competent with engines but ive never worked on a transmission (besides changing clutches in my 5 speed) Any literature i can lookup to help me out? thanks for your help
