Gear install guru's needed
91 rs gear install.......
so i plan on doing this myself despite everyones advice to have them installed. Why? because the only place in a 150 mile radius that will even install them in sc, charges 350 dollars....which is damned retarded,......now i know about all the shimming and everything needed to set the ring and pinion depth. what i need to know is, what special tools will i need? this will allow me to decide if i can do it myself......i will most likely be dropping the rear end entirley to avoid the not being able to see issues with the rear still under the car..
so...special tools needed?? any words of wisdom ? other than the the threads on the ring are reverse lol....

depth mic with a 2-3 rod and something to use as a datum surface or a pinion setting gage, dial type inch pound torque wrench, ft/lb torque wrench, bearing seperator, press, indicator and mag base, few common hand tools, i use 3/4 drive to tighten pinion nuts but 1/2 would work with a cheater i guess, "special tool" to hold pinion yoke.
ron terry has a complete list, maybe you could PM him a nd see what he has to say.

lol uh all of those seem fairly expensive , and all of which i have none of, other than the common hand tools and ft lbs torque wrench.....and i dont think auto zone rents any of those lol....and im assuming ill spend more than 350 dollars in tools to do this....heh....Suucks... Anyone in Ga or Nc or Sc know agoodplace thatll do it for around 100-200 dollars? ill be willing to drive and just wait in a waiting room for 3 hours...

Good luck, you might need a sleeping bag too. It takes more then 3 hours to install gears, they may charge you 3 hours labor but...... Come to think of it $100+ an hour sheeze.
I suggest you just save up and pay the $350 if this is just an I want better gears but my car is fine at the moment situation.

weird, the people that i know that USED to do gear work said it took them about 3 hours IF they knew exactly what they were doing and had done a few on the gm 7.5 .......so who knows....either way im going to check around the tri state area for a better deal.
and yes this is a *i want gears, dont need them* situation.....i wish i had the tools to do this myself....but id spend more than 350 just buying the tools. i just hate saying "yeah i pulled the engine, ported and polished the heads, installed my tranny, along with 20 other mods, but couldnt install gears" just a pride thing, you all know about that

if you want gears but don't need them take the 350 labor and put it towards tools. look on e bay, you can get a lot of good quality stuff there for cheap, at leaster cheaper than new. you won't need a press or bearing seperator if you let a shop do that part for you and the rate woudl only be a few dollars to press a bearing off. never miss a chance or reason to buy more tools and buy soemitnhg you can get a life time of service out of.
true true ...so what tools can i get away with using seeing as i only have just basic hand tools....sorry for asking alot but i need to kno what to look for, what to get, what i can get away with not having.....also, can i use the same bolt/nut thats on the pinion in my car now?? cause im not sure if the pinion im getting comes with one...

i'd buy the depth mike, look for a dial type in/lb torque wrench. do a search on e bay for snap on torque wrench. if you use the depth mic you'll need something to bolt across the bearing cap surface to measure from. i made mine from a piece of 1x.5 aluminum bar workds for both size 10 bolts and 12 bolts. you'll need an indicator and mag base for checking back lash. to hold the pinion yoke i drilled 4 holes for the u joint bolts to go to and a big hole in the middle for a socket. mine is 3"x36"x.25, i have several sets of holes for 10 and 12 bolts in mine. a 1" mic or dial caliper will be good to have but 100% needed
