Computer for 4th gear lockup?
Computer for 4th gear lockup?
I just got my new engine and rebuilt transmission in but I have run into a couple of problems that hopefully some of you veterans can help me out with.
1) My 4th gear lockup isn't working. Is this because I am not using the computer on the engine anymore? Does the computer get some vacum signal or timing or somthing from the engine and compare it with vehicle speed to decide if the lockup clutch should engage? I am running an HEI now with a Q-Jet so the computer wiring harness to engine is hanging freely. By the way the computer is still hooked up to the trans.
2) With that new engine I really need a harder shift. Someone recomened that I put in a corvette servo and that would help. Can this be done on camaros without pulling the trans? I really dont want to crawl under it to look and I can't remember how much space is under there.
(P.S.) Do any of yall run the lockup in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for improved efficiency??
Thanks and G0D Bless!

The computer uses vehicle speed and engine load info to determine lockup. A retrofit kit is available to provide that function w/o the computer. Check Summit or Jegs.

Yes. there is a kit with a relay that will provide lockup in a non-computer controlled application. This is what you need.
Changing th servo won't do anything for shift firmness. All this does is apply the band and or clutches harder (more fluid pressure). This is needed with more powerful engines, because the torque from the engine tries to slip the clutches or band. The Corvette one is hard to find, and the one that JET makes has a bigger surface area, so I'd use this one if I were you.
You need a good old fashioned shift kit. I like the B&M kits. I always set mine up for street/strip and love that 2nd gear tire chirp.
