T5 swap trouble...
Doing a T5 swap in the 88 GTA.
Need to have the GTA up and running before I can fix/paint my Camaro and I have two weeks off for Christmas to paint the Camaro.
700r4 blew up. Original transmission.
Picked up T5 stuffs from an 83 Fbody. Good deal, don't plan on abusing it (know its weaker)
Everything is done. Drove it.. car will not idle (dies). Speedo stuff doesn't work properly and come to find out it needs to for the car to run correctly.
What options do we have to make the speedometer work? Visited the dealer and they said they do not have the VSS stuff anymore. I got a suggestion to swap out the tailshafts from the auto to the T5... is that possible? I heard the torque arm brackets are different, but the rest should bolt up....?
I did searches on here, but Im on 56k and it's insanely slow. I read that 'Dakota Digital SGI-5' would fix the 2 and 4 pulse problems.
My father got an aftermarket deal.. but I cannot recall what it was (I will find out tomrrow). It did not work. Does the computer need to be reset (disconnect battery) to be able to recognize it? He said he will call tech support from the company tomorrow, but I just thought I woud post here to get any suggestions.

Speed Sensor. Not sure which my father bought. Just thought I would throw that out. Wonder if "late TPI" means Speed Density? Or 86 and up? or what....

Just get a VSS from a T-5 at the boneyard. I'm not sure which ones are exactly right; I know the carb ones and the TPI ones for these cars are the same, but the TBI ones are different. However I have no clue about 6-cylinders or any other platforms besides F bodies.
The VSS plugs directly in, in place of the thing that the 83's cable used to hook to. If you don't have the right speedo gears the speedo might read wrong, but at least it will work.

Couldnt find any T5s in that local yards that's part of the problem too. The only one that I've ever seen around here... we used in the swap in my 88 Camaro. V6 T5. :-\ Got the 83 T5 off of Ebay I believe.

Watch the classifieds on this site; look for somebody parting out a car; if it's a 5-speed, buy their VSS & driven gear. Probably one on there now, usually is. Or, check a couple of the sponsors at the top of this page, that's what they do for a living is part out cars.

Emailed dad about it... ECM is not recognizing the VSS he says. Hooked up the old one from the automatic... spun it... and it works fine.
We got a 4 pulse one from a friend of ours and it doesn't recognize that. So we got the 2 pulse one for older 3rd gens from Painless and it is not being recognized either.
I'm going to email the sponsers and see if they have anything. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'd always wondered why thirdgen.org didnt have a 'For Sale' section.
