700r4 problem 1st only

I any one can help it would be greatly apreciated, my friends tran will not shift out of first gear this happened with out warning trans fuild is still red and has no bruned smell can any one out there give an answer to this problem

Stuck governor is a definite possibility.

Axle/Gears: 10-bolt 3.42
i'd say a stripped governor gear. i think they're about 20 bucks from gm and not hard at all to replace.

The governor is under the governor cover (rounded metal cover on the left side of the trans). It isn't in the valvebody, so you don't have to drop the pan. It's fairly easy to get to.
