Need help IDing a 5 speed
I just bought a 5 speed for my Iroc (finally!!) for $300. It has about 90,000 on it, but it was worth it; as long as it is a WC.
It has a tube coming off the top, looks like a breather.
It also says use ATF on the side
And 88 is stamped on the top in a circle.
Is it the WC tranny? Should I replace the bearings while it's out?

Go down towards the bottom of the page there's a place you can look up the trans by the tag number.

On the front of the trans, just below the input shaft, there is a bearing. It is partially covered up by the input shaft bearing retainer. If it says TIMKEN on the perimeter, it is a WC. It is the outer race of the mainshaft bearing, and such, it will look like one. If there is no writing on it at all, it's a non WC. It will look like a stamped plug of sorts, and be perfectly flat.
This is the definitave visual inspection.

Thanks, that was what I was looking for... a lazy way to do it
I can't seem to find that... these are all the #'s on it:
On the top:
Borg Warner Automotive
Basic 2A (in a signature text)
"88" in a circle
Passenger side:
13-52-065-914
1KL 108712
USE DEXTRON II ATF
There is also a metal tag on the driver's side that is on one of the bolts holding the tailshaft part on the tranny. I can't read it though... it's all rusty.
Is this a WC T5? I can't seem to find it on those links!

Anyone? I'm really confused! Are there more #'s somewhere that I'm not seeing? The aluminum is kinda corroded (the car was sitting in a field
) and the tranny is very greasy.

Yah, I just learned that a few days ago when I asked if a Mustang T5 would fit. lol
But, I saw this tranny come out of a Camaro! Also I think the Mustang tailshafts are shorter than the Camaro ones.
I just need to know if the #'s that I posted are World Class or not... I would think it is a WC because the date stamp on the top is 88, and I think all 88's had the WC.
I just don't want to put it in and have another blow because the stock lb/ft rating is more than the non-WC can take!

Anyone? I saw 1352-066 on the tailshaft part, but the ID thing on that link tells me not to read casting #'s...

Screw a bunch of numbers. Just look at the transmission.
The 1st design has a front countergear bearing that looks like an upside-down freeze plug; absolutely flat and shiny, except the edges look sort of rolled-over. The 2nd design aka W... Worl..... {puuuuuuukkkkkke} sorry, I can't bring myself to spout that stupid ISO 9000 / Total Quality Mgmt / PIT Team BS one-minute-manager buzzword.... has a bearing that is dull, has sharp edges, and a depressed center that makes it look like it has a ridge about 3/16" wide all the way around it.

If your numbers are comming up fNord T5 then it did not come out of a GM F body. The easyest way to ID new and old style is the pictures RB posted, the front of the transmissions look totaly different. I have seen a GM drivetrain in an 86 rustang but Ive never seen it the other way around.

So going by the pics you posted, I have concluded that it is a WC tranny. But, when I stand it up so the front part is perfectly horizontal, the shifter is horizontal as well. Is the shifter off to one side or is the whole tranny crooked as opposed to the bellhousing?

Look at the relationship of the shifter pad to the mount pad. If they're parallel, it's not out of a F body. If they look like the circled parts in this pic, then it is. Note also the torque arm mount in the pic.
None of the identifying characteristics are visible in your pic, because they're all covered up by that shifter boot (which is out of a Camaro FWIW).

Yes it does have the torque arm mount... I didn't think of that. Did only 3rd gens have that? If so, then I am all set!
