anyone w/ stock motor upgrade their converter??
anyone w/ stock motor upgrade their converter??
i'm trying to figure out if it's a good idea to upgrade my converter now that i will have my tranny out. i know what stall speed does but am still unsure how it would perform while driving, how much it'll affect gas mileage, etc. my motor is close to stock and i plan on keeping it that way until whenever i finish up the motor that i have on the stand. i have 3.23 gears and do both city and highway driving and racing on the street only on weekends. i dont plan on going with higher gears anytime soon.
also i'd like to hear anything else i can do to the tranny while its out. the pan is off. anyway i can tell if it has a shift kit? just from driving it shifts hard but doesn't chirp tires. i'd really like to do anything to it now that it's out if it will really benefit me. any help appreciated.

Torque Converter, Lock-Up 1986-91 Vette/1985-94 Camaro/Firebird (2400)
These 298mm (11.73") diameter torque converters are designed to improve low speed (bottom end) performance while still retaining the lock-up features of the stock converter. By raising the stall speed to approximately 2400 RPM the engine is in its power band sooner. Zero to 60 and 1/4 mile performance times are reduced as much as 2 to 3 tenths. Driveability improves with little or no effect on fuel economy depending on your driving style.
Our converters feature fully brazed pump fins and high capacity Torrington thrust bearings for durability and are fully balanced. They are completely compatible with the TPI Computer in your car and require no modifications for installation. We recommend this converter for use with rear gears up to 3.73. With any high stall converter a transmission cooler is recommended.
slp most likely tested it on a stock 350 tpi thirdgen, but who knows.
u can get good gains from just a converter on stock engines as far as my research i did goes. the even smaller size converter like 9 1/2 inch ones would help with gas mileage and get even more performance.

if you plan on keeping those rear gears and a stock style motor for a while....go to Autozone, pep boys, whatever and buy a convertor for this:
1998 S10 4.3L W engine code(if asked)
2 wheel drive.
this should net you a 2200 stall speed, and only cost around $125 for a convertor.....WAY cheaper than a $340 SLP convertor. Plus....turn in your old stock 3rd gen converter as the core
This is the same converter as the "corvette" converters that stalled at 2200 RPM .....besides the fact that asking for an S10 converter is much cheaper typically for the same part number.
hope this helps, and i've put these in several of my cars and friend's cars for a little better pep off the line, and it still retains lock-up and good drivability.

When I first bought my Z I had the tranny out at least 6 times due to a shister at a local shop bending me over, but that a story for another time. Ounce the situation was resolved, I put in a 2200 stall, aside from getting the trans. to work right, it was the best thing I could have done to the car at that time. I have since gone to a 2600 stall, and it is two differant cars at the track, and you cannot tell the differance in gas milage.

i just installed an ACT 2400 stall 9.5" torque converter with my ProBuilt tranny and i love it. Almost no effect on driveability and i have seen no change in gas mileage, i should have some new track times with the converter and tranny on the 16th of Feb.
well i was about to order one but i just got a deal on this aftermarket base so the converter will have to wait. for now i'll just replace the seals and put everything back on. the servo i can do another time with tranny still in car.

I put the SLP 2400stall on my stock 350 tpi, the car felt faster, but wheel spin limited my 1/4 gains. Best 60ft was a spinnin 2.01.
i just got done with the tranny. put in a vette 2100 stall and servo. i probably wont feel any gains from the stall until i know how to launch better. but the servo definitely made a difference! i'll be putting an accel base soon then i'm off to the track to see if i can better my times.

my stock 89' RS 700R4 converter would stall to about 1000 RPMS before the tires spun, but during a roll in high gear it would push to about 1800RPMS.
just by changing the motor to a 355TPI, I can push the stock converter to over 2300 RPMS before it stops in high gear rolling. i still have the 1000RPM limit from a dead stop though.
I just bought a vigilante 3000 stall 9.5" lockup, but Im not going to put an $800 converter in a stock transmission with 130,000 miles... thats asking for trouble.
I think one of the best improvements you can make to your ride is to setup your drivetrain properly. by this i mean properly shifting transmission, proper stall, and proper rear gears. its AMAZING the difference it makes, even with the same motor up front.
