TH350 swap

I have an 82 T/A I'm swapping a 350 chevy and a TH350 tranny into. do i need a new x-member to make the swap work? or can i use the existing stock one? also, can i swap the tail shaft with my th200's tail shaft so the driveshaft length will remain the same? any help is appreciated. also, this is my first time on the boards. hi from ATL.

long tail houseing th350 with the b&m kit should be a bolt in swap, i think. it is when you swap from a th700r4 or t5.

I'm in the process of the same swap, except my 82 has the 4 sp T-10.

Apparently, the 200C is identical in dimensions to a short tail TH350, which are the most common. You can't take the tailshaft off a 200C. Apparently the 200C crossmember will work perfectly.

Long tail is best for 83-92 with a 700R4, not for your 82.

You'll still need the Hurst or B&M conversion kit to attach the torque arm. I went with the Hurst kit as it seemed more complete and was only a couple bucks more.

simple as this...

Short tail TH 350 +
B&M kit
... Done. ( very easy and simple swap )

although i think sphone has a torque arm set up that can eliminate the need for the kit ( and a new torque arm to boot ) but i dont have it yet, but if you are in the market for such a item look it up.

you got a T/A? looks like we're gonna be talking a lot then. I just measured my trannies (aka I put them side by side) and you're right. exact fit. I'm going to get the spohn kit; I'd rather have a tougher torque arm for when i make more power; also, their sfc's. with the money I'm going to save on a driveshaft, I think I'm going to get a posi unit and some gears. thanks guys!

one last question.... the little round thing on the right side of the TH350... looks like a hose plugs into it. it's brass-colored and metallic, and the plug (place where a little hose goes into it) faces aft. what is that? and on my th200c, there's a 4-prong electrical connector. what do i do with it? there's no where to plug it into the th350.

The round thing you're referring to on the TH350 is probably the vacuum modulator, which controls your shift points. You need to hook it up to a vacuum source on the engine, preferably somewhere on the intake manifold. As far as the four prong connector, you could hang it on your Christmas tree next year as an ornament since you'll have absolutely no use for it with the TH350. My buddy put a TH350 in his 90 Iroc and he jumped two of the prongs on that connector to keep from getting a check engine light, but I couldn't tell you which ones he jumped for sure.

the b&m kit works with either short or long tail shafts. the big problem is the drive shaft fitting the shorter trans, it doesn't.

This is my understanding:

TH350 short tail will fit 200C stock driveshaft
TH350 long tail will fit 700R4 stock driveshaft
TH350 can use 200C x-member or use B&M/Hurst adaptor kit to fit 700R4 x-member

My question is what kind of a torque converter I should use. flyitlikustolit, what converter are you using? I asked that question here but haven't had any answers yet.

MY tranny is built for my motor.... I bought the two together, and it came with a 2400 stall. I'll let you know how it goes when i get it on the road. i think i may upgrade to a 2800 or 3000 stall if the 2400 isn't enough. the original owner of my engine told me that the stall was mild enough to be a daily driver with no problems at all, but was still high enough at 2400 to be useful. I would say start with a 2500-2800. upgrade if you don't like them.

I only have an LG4 right now. Would 2000 - 2500 be better for a weekend cruiser?

definitely. like i said... I have a 2400. I would get a 2400 or 2500. they'll get up and go, but not jerk you around town. when you upgrade to a 350 or bigger, you can change it then. email me at Flyitlikeustolit@hotmail.com or AIM at flyitlikeustolit if you have any questions about the setup I'm running. I"m rebuilding the entire engine compartment.... I just bought $95 worth of A/C equipment, just to give you an idea. (damn 134a)
