What to do about kickdown cable for TH350 install
I understand you can run without it, you just would have to manually downshift when you want to go into "passing gear". Also that the kickdown cable really is just a kickdown cable, not a cable that sets shift points like on the 700 r4
The rebuilt TH350 has a hole where the cable goes with a little wire sticking out where you hook up the cable. Ive got to put something there, either a plug or a cable. I called GM about getting a cable and they have them, PN such and such, but there are several different codes, like M,F, C etc. What did you all do. They are only like $18, I guess I could just order one and hope it works. Are they all the same, just different lengths or what.??

Is there a vacuum port on the pass side of the trans. Thats what was used to control shift points on the only 350 ive delt with. The different cable letters are probably for installation in different cars. Your best bet might be to rig up your own custon since the tranny was never installed in our cars youd be hard pressed to find the correct cable lenth at the dealer.

You could check at a transmission shop and they may have an extra cable around or maybe auto wreckers. I didn't bother hooking my cable up as my car is 95% track.
i just went through this with my th350, get a universal th350 kick down cable, call around i am sure u will find one. the one i got i could adjust the cable to whatever i wanted, had more then enough room to reach the carb. to install it u need to take off pan though.

hmm. OK I get what you are saying about the universal cable. and I rembembe I took the pan off on the 700 r4 to install the TV cable. But what I saw in the shop on the reebuilt TH350 was a hole like on the 700r4 above the pan area, with a wire sticking out of that hole. It looks like you could just attach the cable to that wire and then screw on the housing, maybe not. Whatever on that. The big problem now is they say that the HUrst bracket I bought doesn' line up on the VSS and other stuff. I only see one model on the Jegs catalog for "82 and up CAmaro/Firebird". I have a 92, does it need to be modified or is there a different one.
no i mean universal cable, its new not used/old, go to any tranny shop or parts store and tell them u want a universal th350 kickdown cable. thats what i did and the universal one works great.

Would a Kickdown cable be required for a manual shift TH350? Also, what are you guys doing about the VSS, and were you able to use the stock driveshaft?

my understanding is a kickdowon cable is not stictly needed. Its not like the TV cable on the 700r4, all it does is kick the tranny down a gear when you jump on it, the famous "passing gear". You can certainly do this by hand, I shift mostly manually anyway. The problem is there is a hole in the transmission where the kickdown cable goes and something has to go there or all the fluid will come out. I just bought a universal one and am having them install it in the. I dont want them to take of the Superram plenum which would be necessary to hook the other end to the throttle so they are just going to rout it up there and cable tie it off out of the way. The next time I have the plenum off I will run it through there. It only cost like $18 so I figured why not.
I bought a VSS from Jags that run, hopefully that will work. The tranny needs to be set up with the right number of teeth on the gear that normally runs the cable to match your rear end.
I got a TH350 with a 9" tailshaft so I could use the stock Drive shaft. However, none of the holes on the HUrst adapter kit bracket line up with the VSS or the bracket that holds the Torque arm. We are modifying it but Im thinking that its because of the long tailshaft.

OK, so as long as I stick with the manual shift, all I would need to do is plug the kickdown cable hole. How much did the VSS run ya, and do you have a part # handy, I cant find it on their site.
no a kickdown cable is not a must, lots of guys dont bother hooking one up. say u dont have one, when u mash the gas from roll she wont down shift, u have to do it manualy. i went months before i installed one.

I dont have the pn for the vss handy, but do a search for "jags that run" and Im sure you will get the link. then just call them and ask them which you need.
If you dont install a kickdown cable, how did you plug the hole?

I bought a "universal cable" at the auto parts store. When the guy at the shop put in the tranny, I told him to just install the cable on the trans and run it up but don't mess with installing it because that would require taking the intake off to route the cable to the bracket. I have a Superam intake and its a real pain and time consuming to get off. I figured I would just connect it the next time I have the intake off. There is no way it is going to fit. The distance between the part that mounts to the accelerator cable bracket, to the end where it mounts to the TB it way too long. I guess Im just going to leave it like it is for now.
