Are you talking about a ring and pinion??

If so they are mached sets with specific mates. Manufacturers lap in a wear pattern before they send them out, then number them so you wont mismatch parts....

GM doesn't make speedo gears for a 3.73 swap. I think you can find them aftermarket but not from the General. I am pretty sure there are only GM speedo gears for the 3.08 and 3.42 gears for the T5.

Yeah call me crazy but that's why i didn't make the switch to 3.73's. I heard that 3.42's will give almost the same performance but at least your speedo will work.

I just thought of something, didn't some of the old Z28's with an L69 and a T-5 get 3.73's stock from the factory? I know those cars had cable speedos and they read right. The beauty of it is the cable and VSS speedo gears are the same, try looking up gears for a 3.73 equipped L69 83 Z28 with a T-5.

You can definitely get them at the dealer. The 3.73/T-5 combo was stock in the HO cars.

I know, because I have one, and I've bought gears for it, a couple of times actually.

SLP has them, but their pricibg is a little bit predatory. There's some other place that sells them, but I can't recall who it is.... if you search this forum for "speedo gears" you'll probably be able to find it.

Hey good to hear. You learn something new every day. Aren't the SLP calibrators for 3.7 gears or some other odd number?

Aren't you still out of luck when it comes to the electric speedo though?

Well, look at it this way....

From 3.73 to 3.70 is less than a 1% change.

From 21 teeth to 20 teeth, or 21 teeth to 22 teeth, is just about a 5% change.

There's no gears with a fractional number of teeth in between 20, 21, & 22.

So, will it really matter if the gears are said to be for a 3.70 or a 3.73?

As far as electronic ones, I have no clue; but I do know that there were 85 TAs with electronic speedo and L69/T-5/3.70, so they "ought to" exist. (for whatever good "ought to" does anybody)

Hey shifty don't you remember my whole dilema with the T-5 speedo gears, they are the same part number for both just have to remove the metal shaft from the driven gear and then it fits onto the VSS.

Do a search with my screen name in the trans section and the word speedo I did a write up on this about a month ago.

Yea you are right. I forgot how easy your fix was. I just figured SLP would label that calibration as 3.73. That has thrown me off for years and now it makes sence. I didn't realize that the gear for the 3.73 was not an exact tooth count like most other gears are. The gears that do exist that are near it are actually for a 3.70. Makes sense now.
