Bye Bye 3rd Gear. Hello 30 mph on the interstate
So, there i was, driving to see my girl on the Easter Holiday after a long and very hard week, when all of a sudden, after a toll booth on 408 in Orlando, my car wont shift into third. In fact, it starts spinning back into first and I'm trying to find a shoulder to drive on while my car is redlining and theres a line of unhappy drivers behind me.
I finally find a nice shady place to pull off of the road. Thankfully because my car is reading almost 220 degrees (almost 260 degrees when the car was shut down) from the engine winding out. I park, pop the hood to let the heat out, and take it as another problem in a week of problems.
As im sitting there, im thinking, could this be when i adjusted the TV cable. I thought i did that right. Push down the button, put the throttle all the way (by hand, not by gas pedal, and release button. It seemed to shif to hard anyway, so i put it down a few notches.
The tranny has been acting wierd. Before the TV change, the motor would hesitate and bog. After the tv change, the bog was gone, but the shifts would go from firm to soft after some driving. When Id park it and let it cool, it would go back to hard and soften with more driving.
So, on the side of the road, i decided to occupy my time by dumping out some of the fluid (by loosening the tranny cooling cable) and putting some fresh stuff in. Well, that did no good amd I just kept it in (2) to keep it from trying to find 3rd and just spin and not catch.
Later, i read on here that its normal to lose 3-4 and it might mean a rebuild. Great. I know nothing about transmissions and that stuff costs alot of money.

what kind of car do you have and where are you located, I have a 700r4 you could have for free, it works but slips going into second and makes bad noises in OD, but it did all this for 2 years before it took it out.

Did you slide the cable casing back towards the firewall, or towards the radiator? The way you worded it is kind of confusing.

I set it by pushing that grey button down w/ one hand, opening the throttle blades with the other, and pushing the casing in (towards the firewall) untill the tv cable was guitar string tight.
Ok, update. My brother knowes a guy and he's going to rebuild the trans. I talked to him for a while and he seems very smart and knows alot about this trans. He's also going to do it for about $500, which takes alot of the edge off of this catastrophe, considering im broke.
I spent 4 hours detailing the car and got ready to drive it another hour at 35 mph and hit another spot of luck! As I was waiting to go down US1, a few police cars blocked off the intersection for a huge funeral procession. I dont know who it was for and probably dont want to know, but I just drove behind that all the way to melbourne at 30mph.
Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you dont.

I would, but I will probably be better off just doing my TH350 swap, and rebuilding the one I have.
Thanks though!
