how much gear noise does a T5 make?

Hey, just bought my first 3rd gen. its an 86 with a305 and t5. it seems to have a fair amount of gear noise in the first 3 gears. is this normal or a sign of wear? the car only has 116k and looks to have had a pretty easy life. i'm a truck guy and the 4 speeds i've owned have all made some noise, but not familiar with cars at all. thanks,

jason

I had a 15th Ann. T/A with a WC T-5 and it was fairly quiet.

yea Ive got a 86 gearbox in my car with about 100k on it and its quiet, check your fluid and make sure its auto tranny fluid and not gear oil and its the right level.
*edit* nice car btw, looks very cherry.

If all is well inside the trans, it should be quiet when running.
The noise you are hearing is most likely the bearings on the countergear shaft. It won't get any better, and depending on how it's maintained and driven, could still give many miles of service.

My WC T-5 was silent until I put a hurst billet shifter in it. Now it makes a little noise but only through the shifter and it is not that loud.

i checked the fluid and its full and has atf in it. its noisiest during coast or deceleration. also makes some noise with the clutch ingaged in nuetral and goes away when i puch the pedel in- so i'm thinking my through out bearing might be part of the problem too.

When you push the pedal down, the guts of the transmission will stop turning after a few or five seconds; nothing is going to make the noise when it's not rotating.
