Replacing Rearend

I need to replace the rearend in my 90 Iroc. A guy I know sells me a rearend from a 96 formula for $150.00. I don't want to replace the complete rearend with that one because the 4th gen rear is wider, can I just replace the gearbox? Are they interchangeable? I have the original wheels and tires in my 90 conv. and don't want the tires to stick out, and I am having a hard time finding an original posi unit. Any help will be appreciated.

Joe

if you have a 9 bolt no, if you have a 10 bolt yes and it's called a carrier not gear box.

Ok, I may just do that then.

If I do replace the gear carrier, one of the problems I know I am going to have is that I do not remember how many washers were next to the gear carrier. When I removed it, there were some spacers in between the gear carrier and the rearend, I do not remember how they were placed. There was one thick washer, and two or three thin ones. Does it really matter how I put this back, or it is fine as long as there is no movement of the gear carrier once is installed? Where can I find the specs for something like this? I like to know the torque specs too.

Joe
PS Does anybody know what other vehicles use the same 28 spline axle as my 90 camaro rearend? Are the axles from an S10 88 or newer the same?

it matter how the spacers go back in relation to getting the correct backlash, not it how they were in the rear before.
