TH400 Problems...

I've been having pressure issues with my TH400 since i put it in my T/A a few years ago. I don't drive it much on the street so i haven't addressed the issue yet. When you accelerate normally from a stop light, as soon as it tries to go into 2nd it jerks back and forth really bad untill i wind up the engine a little bit to get it to shift. It's not all the time but just enough to be annoying.

--also--

If i'm cruzing around at about 35Mph and stomp the gas, it should downshift if the pressures are right w/o the kick-down switch being hit (i have a small pushbutton for that purpose on my shifter). it seems like it tries real hard to downshift, but again it jerks back and forth, into and out of 2nd gear and then eventually just stays in 3rd

If I hit the kick-down switch when the car is in 2nd, like going around a turn at about 15 Mph it easially shifts down to first and will boil 'em nicely around the turn.

I'm pretty sure i'm gonna have to rebuild it, but anyone know of anything else that might be wrong. I'm going to change the filter and fluid this week just to make sure but my expierance with auto trannys is limited.

Thanks for any info,
Dave

they can only kick down for certain speeds, so if you modify your governor it might fix the problem

Only one problem Trickster, there is no TV cable on a TH400. There's a kickdown switch (which I don't even run) and a vacuum line to the modulator. My only guess is check the vacuum line and don't have anything T'd off from that line cause it can cause problems. It did for me anyway...

LOL! i was gonna say. i gots no cable.. Thanks for the info tho

I'll try replacing the modulator and the vacuum line, maybe that'll help. Maybe i'll try and record the whineing sound it makes if i pull it back into 2nd or 1st. it's quite loud

Maybe it's time for a new or rebuilt tranny......
