Tranny fluid

I purchased a 1983 camaro for the transmission(borg warner T-5). Well in the process of removing it i drained the fluid and it came out a brownish black color and smelt burnt. The tranny worked b-4 removal or at least through first and reverse so i didnt know if i should take it to someone and get it rebuilt or just add new tranny fluid and bolt it back up or put the old back in. Thanks for your help!

i don't know about the older t5, but the one in my 92 uses ATF. If you dont mind the poss. of removing the tranny again, try fully synthetic atf, it worked wonders for mine, very improved shifting.

but then again yours might use gear oil. idk

if you want to be safe though, have it rebuilt, there is a range of improvements possible, including using wc or stronger parts

yeah i would have to agree that running synthetic would definatley be the way to go and maybe add a little life to that transmission also

That older T5 is a non WC tranny. I think they take gear lube, not ATF. The WC T5s definitely take ATF. I have a WC T5 in my 88 IROC and I use M1 synthetic ATF.
