9 bolt posi, worth it?

There is a 9 bolt posi under an IrocZ at the junkyard right now. It has disc breaks. The cover was pulled and on the gears it had 2.77 stamped on them. So i am pretty sure thats the ratio. Anyway, they said they would take 250 bucks for it. I am going to try to get it for 200. Does that sound like a decent price? I still have to buy some 4.10 gears and install them.

4.10's won't fit that carrier. How are you going to handle that?

you can get 3:73s for them....more pricey for them than a 10 bolt but a tougher rear end........so i would say you can handle that

2 series carrier and 3 series gears will not work on that 9-bolt rear.

man,,,,how did i miss the ratio....3:23 and up you can put nice gears on....a lot of auto tpi 305s had 3:27s, we just took one out of an 87 bird 305 5 speed and it has 3:45s....so i would look around for something like that...

you can get 4.10 gears for the 9 bolt but its not worth it. I looked into it b4 i put the chrysler 8 3/4 in my car . I mean they make em , very limited but i dont see why it would be worth it , maybe to make a totally appearing stock car , i dunno.

Whatever lower gears he was thinking about cannot be used with 2:77 9-bolt he was looking at. End of story.

I picked up a 9 bolt with 3.27s for 100 bucks from a guy off the board in MI. I dont think I would pay 200 for that rearend unless you find something with 3.27s or better.

They should, as long as the diff was 89 or newer. If it wasn't just swap the brackets over and go.

I think that the 9-bolt is a way better diff than the 10 bolt. I broke 2 10 bolts, both posi, both 3.08. I have yet to hurt my 9-bolt. I thought I did, but it turned out to be a brake problem. If you want deep gears, you'd better find a 3.27 or better. I think that Randy's sells 4.10's and 3.73's for the 9 bolt.

If you bought a 3:23 ratio I would check to make sure it is a 9-bolt a 3:27 is the correct ratio. You need to know what you have first. And No, 10-bolt brakes will not work with a 9-bolt, but again it depends on what you have.

I dunno I still have the 9 bolt 3.27 sitting behind the shop I took from my T5 doner car. I wonder if my 10 V6 3.42 bolt $100, $400 powertrax would outlast that posi disk 9 bolt. Sure seems to stop just fine and has held for 3 years of abnormal abuse. I never had a chick come over and say uhhahhh rear disk brakes.

yeah your right it is a 3.27 rear end not a 3.23 sorry. How about the 98-02 LT1 disc brakes will they bolt right up to a 9 bolt?

When I was stationed in San Diego, the bone yards were full of 9-bolts. I got a 3.70 for $60 at a half-off day. Brought it all the way back to San Antonio, where the bone yards here want $500 bones for 'em. Just plain crazy.

Jim.

Just wanted to jump in here for a second, so what you're saying is to upgrade to 3.73 or 4.10 gears you need to have a 3.27 rear or 3.45.

So the 9 bolt with the 2.77 is useless and not upgradeable as the others?

Your statement is correct. Unless you can get a new carrier.
