Gear Ratio Question

Ok, you have a standard 700r4 transmission automatic, and a rear end that isn't possie with a gear ratio of 2.73 I think is writen like that. If I wanted to put a bigger gear in their and possie converter kit, what all would need to be done? Or could it be done with out screwing up the power of my car.

Ummm...rear end gears will not effect the actually engine operation.

To convert to posi-traction you will actually need a posi carrier. (i.e posi unit) and a good set of gears like 3.42s or 3.73s would help a lot.

I was watching speed vision and on one of those shows, I think it was Horse Power TV, they showed how to install a posi converter kit on a regular differential. Do they not make those for a 91 Firebird like what I got.

there is no such thing as a posi converter kit. only way you'll get posi is to install a posi carrier.

Powertrax converts a standard open carrier to a locking type. They are available from Jeg's & Summit as well as others.

All I remember about that episode was that they had a differential that was not posi and they opened up the part in the center with all the gears in it and they put something in there and afterwords they took the car out and it rolled posi marks on the race track. All I know about this is what I sall on the show. But I was pretty sure that thats what they called the kit that they used a posi converter kit. Maybe I'm just mistaken on the name?

Powertrax does sound familular. That maybe what they were using on that show I don't know. I'm doing some research on that.

It was probably a powertrax unit or a mini spool. Neither of which I would wanna use on the street.
