anyone ever use/using a powertrax unit?

i need to put a posi in my car,and im thinkin about using the Powertrax unit. It goes in place of the "spider" gears on the rear end.

Has anyone here used them,is using them,or know some1 who is? how well do they work? are they strong?

thanks for any replys

Measurements? You don't need measurements when throwing in a new carrier, only when changing the gears. Just get your new posi carrier get the old one out and slip in the new one using the old shims, thats what I and several have done and no problems or whining.

I don't use one but have heard that they are good. They seem to be fairly simple to install. I believe one of the car mags recently installed one in a camaro. I was thinking chp did it but found the article and it turned out to be an Auburn posi unit. You might also look into the Detroit Truetrac, I believe Randy's Ring & Pinion carries them.

Pasky, where do you see that he mentioned anything about measurements?

Ah, the old "edit after someone comments" routine...

I have one in the 8.2" 10-bolt, been there since '01. I used the "Strip/Street" springs instead of the "Street/Strip" springs because the car is street driven primarily to get to the track. The "Street/Strip" are a little quieter and smoother.

I have found a small chip broken off of two corners of the end "dogs". I don't know if a similar problem would exist for a 7-5/8" 10-bolt. Found the first one when changing from 3.08 to 3.73 gears, and the 2nd when changing the gear lube this spring. Didn't seem to hurt anything or affect function of the unit itself.

A hint for improving strength while you're at it: Get a unit for 28-spline axles, and replace your 26-spline axles while you're at it. Also weld the tubes and install a support cover.

Okay, that was a couple-three hints...

Ive got a powertrax noslip unit in my bird. Its nothing special but has taken abuse in two different fbodys for a few years. I'd say its worth it although I you probably should decide if you want to gear up now because its a pain to take these things out unless your Five7.

I used to have one but broke it Worked good for about 8 months though I never sent it in for a replacement since I decided to get a 9 inch rear instead.
