can't get the pinion bearing off
hi
You guys know any good tricks for getting the pinon bearing off? I'm trying to change the shim thickness but i can't get the thing to move at all. Old one came off much easier.
thanks for any help, nick

Are you talking the inner-pinion bearing? If so, I had to seek professional help! :-)
On my 9-Bolt rear, the pinion shim was actually behind the bearing race. You might be able to stuff one behind there to achieve the same effect. I found I was able to get the old race out without destroying it. The shim used behind the race was exactly the same size as some carrier shims that came with my install kit.
If you do acheive success getting the inner pinion bearing out yourself, post how you did it!

the inner bearing on the 3.08's came off just by tapping it with a hammer and two flat blade screwdrivers (wedging them one behind the other). Took a long time, but it came off. I thought the new bearing on the 3.73's would be the same way, but I was wrong....Guess im going to a machine shop...
On my old 2.73 pinion I just put the nut back on to protect the threads and whacked it on the bench a couple times. Popped right off.
To put the bearing on the new 4.10 pinion I put the pinion gear in the freezer over night and set the bearing out in the sun for a couple hours. Slipped right on.
