Tranny question

my gf bought an 1987 chevy camaro, but the tranny started to slip about 3 weeks ago, I parked it, a few times and didn't do much with it, it doesn't drive over 60 if I'm lucky and slows on hills, now I'm not sure if this is a cause of having either low, bad, or no tranny fluid left or if she got it with a tranny that is in need of either rebuilding or replacement, but I was kind of hoping that maybe the fluid may have something to do with this, the kid she bought the car from said he hasn't changed the trans fluid in the time he had it (1 year) so I thought since it started about 3 weeks ago maybe it is still saveable for, I have no money, so I'm hoping..LOL, Thanks

Did you try looking at the fluid level? That would be a good way to tell if it needs some added.

good point, checking the fluid level is a sure way to know if it's low. generally if it's low, some should be added.

Well I checked it, and I wanted to go shoot the kid she bought the car from, the tranny fluid dipstick was clean and what I mean by clean as I mean...nothing on it yeah just a little...very little amount left, looked like the oil dipstick on my firebird when I checked it.... heh maybe this will correct the problem if it hasn't been going on for too long and didn't damage it.. arg "crosses fingers"

Well I put some tranny fluid in and some other stuff to help it from slipping, I don't exactly remember the name on the bottle but it was for it. It seemed to have stopped slipping, but now it just lacks alot of pwr and still will only go to around 30 - 40 mph. I had already asked a garage and they said the clutch plates in the tranny are burned up, do you guys also think this? I can get a tranny from a junk for 100 but, I'm not sure if I should atempt a junk yard, but like I asked, you think the clutch plates burned up?

one more thing, it still shifts, I heard it on the highway shifting, just not sure though....

kinda the same problem altho mine still shifts and works altho clunks real bad cause my clutchs are burned up. and buying a used tranny is a waste in my mind due to the fact it may just do the same thing in a week. old trannys are old trannys no getting away from it. so i am getting mine rebuilt and its costing me 1800$ Canadian funds
