speedo jumping after tranny install

To cut to the chase. Just had a garage install my tranny (the last time I let someone else do a job on the car) and the speedo is dead then ll of a sudden it will jump up and jump around for a while then hit rock bottom. It's a cable driven unit so I'm guessing the garage didn't fit the speedo gears correctly? How do you adjust these things?

Thanks

Robert

If the speedo doesn't work, and then suddenly jumps to life the problem is most likely not in the trans. Could be a bad speedo cable or a bad speedo. The gears either work or they don't. Even if the gear was wrong the speedo would still read, it would just be wrong.

not always true, i had a trans that had a few teeth missing off the gears in the tranny, sometimes my speedo worked sometime it didn't. i swapped out to a known good cluster and a new cable, only to find out the gears in the tranny were screwed up. Not saying it's common but it did happen to me.

Speedo was working fine before the garage changed the trans and the speedo gears. I'll have to have a look at it. Thanks for the help.

Well, it's simple enough to check the speedo gears, and I'd certainly do that before spending any money.

BTW, if you need a speedo cable I've got a good used one. PM me if that turns out to be your problem.

I've seen them do that; it's usually been a combination of cable and gears. The cable binds, and makes the gears not work, and if it does that for long enough, it'll tear up the gears.

Lube the cable, and make sure the sleeve for the driven gear is in right. You may just need new gears though which fortunately isn't too painful in a 700.

Pulled the gear out of the tranny. It was the wrong sleeve. It's a miracle it managed to jump at all. I've put in my old gear which under reads-it's better than nothing at all-until the correct one arrives.
