limited slip to posi swap HELP!!!
ok i have a 89 RS (v6) and am doing a v8 swap i resently bought a aftermarket posi unit out of a later camaro (98-02) and the gear installed fine and so did the bearings and when i went to put is the axles i found they were to small . i called the shop and they said there should be no problems what so ever but someone else told me i dont have the right spline but a 90- 92 would work.....is he right or should i take this posi and throw it through the shops front window for lying to me. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Thanks
You have 26 splines in your 89 RS and the 4th gen Limited Slip requires 28 spline axle shafts. Thats your problem, 89 was the change ove year on the axle shafts from 26 to 28 and your RS was not one of them.

That is correct.
However, you are not changing from "limited slip" to "posi"; those are 2 different names for the same thing, one generic and one a trademark. You are changing from "unlimited slip" (open) to "limited slip" (some degree of traction enforcement).
Cheapest thing to do would probably be to find a whole 90-92 6-cyl rear at the junkyard, and get the axles. You'll probably have to pay for the whole rear since you'll be rducing the value of the rest of it to zero; that is, you might find that you could buy one axle for $180, both axles for $180, the gerars for $180, the carrier for $180, ..... or the whole rear for $180, and just leave behind whatever you don't want. New axles of far better qulaity than stock are around $250 a pair, so don't pay anywhere near $250 for a stock rear just to get the axles. If you have to buy axles, I'd suggest Superior axles http://www.superioraxle.com/htmlfolder/evol.html
