Performance rear axle options.

Guys, I'm researching my options here....

I've just finished my L98 with headers and a ZZ4 cam. with a couple other little things and a good PROM, I figure high 200s, close to 300 hp. (just a ballpark)

I currently have the stock 2.77 10 bolt. I have not yet installed a 9 bolt 3.23/posi. that I have. It drove well in the donor car, but it was only a tired 305 TBI with a LOT of miles. Is it worth installing, or should I rebuild the 10 bolt? I read a recent article where they rebuilt a 10 bolt to handle over 400 hp, which would serve me just fine. I really wouldn't mind going to a 3.42, plus I'd know it was NEW. On the flip side, the 9 bolt is paid for, but of course I'd hate to find out it's beat.

Are there other cost effective options? I don't feel I need a bullet proof Moser or similar, and I certainly don't need to pay for it.

Whatch ya'll think?

You also have your axle ratios mixed up for the 9 and 10 bolts.
2:77 is the 9-bolt
3:23 is the 10-bolt
Now you will not confuse people.

I Could do you up an 8.8 reusing your stock axles for a low cost option that would be strong enough to handle that power with ease. Best of all you get whatever gear you want and should you make more power one day you can always upgrade the axles accordingly. For a budget build up it would be the most economical if you provide your own ten bolt core.

...that's not the first time ...

What about rebuilding the old 9-bolt?
...by the time I rebuild the 9, and find the 3.45 (?) gears, it would cost a bit more than the 9, and wouldn't be a whole heck of a lot stronger.

87roc_t56, wow, shipping to Ontario? That doesn't sound good! What would you do to it? pardon my igorance on this subject, I'm learning.

No worries or pardon neccessary man feel free to ask whatever you want to Yeah man I know its a bit of a drag to ship but I threw it out there cause you never know who travels where or friends, deals on shipping etc.

For a budget build I would use the ten bolt axle tubes and axles and use the 8.8 center section, posi and gears so you would have a half and half hybrid rear. I wouldn't recomend doing this for anything more then 350 to 400 engine horse power. It would be stronger than a nine bolt but you would have c clip axles though. The posi would be light years better than the 9 bolt offering however and of course gears are plentiful and quiet.

To build one as described above provided you supply your own 10 bolt rear end with your desired brake backing plates would be $1100 USD. You can deduct another $100 USD for providing a complete Mustang 8.8 rear as well if you want to save more.
