Powertrax No-Slip locker - loud and shakes whole car
Has anybody experienced same problems with their Powertrax No-Slip units? I made my first lap yesterday and No-Slip was acting very strange. It made hell of a noise in corners and shaked rear axle very strong. Also strong boom-boom (1-2 times per second) sound came from rear while cornering. Inner tire doesn't unlock in corners and spins with same speed as outer. I also raised left rear tire and moved it in both directions. In one direction it locked and in other it moves freely. Dont know what to do.
I installed it according to the manual.

I have driven two cars equipped with them...one a supercharged 93 Mustang GT, the other a '68 Dodge Super Bee...and frankly didn't like either one. I couldn't hear it in the Mustang (no cats, turndowns, 3" Flowmasters), but it was constantly locking and unlocking, and rather violently at that. It was louder (or just much easier to hear) in the Super Bee, almost sounded like a herd of horses galloping in the trunk! It seemed more stable than the Mustang, though...it was just really loud. I had a Tractech soft locker in my 97 SS (9"), and while it was a bit loud too it wasn't as harsh as either Powertrax.
You might check your rear tire pressure; sometimes unequal pressure will affect the locking.

Make sure you follow the break-in procedure of doing figure-8s in forward and reverse. The Powertrax Lockers will calm down some with miles on them. The one in my '88 SS has about 20K on it now, and it's really quiet now. What weight oil are you using?

Thanks for your replies. I'm using GL4 80w-90 oil.
I didn't have assistant at the moment of the test and I just raised the one tire and then the other. Driver's side tire moved freely in forward direction and locks when I tried to rotate it in opposite direction. Passenger side tire was locked in both directions. I'll try to make new test with assistant and with both rear tires raised.
TPI Monte SS, I don't have intallation manual with me at the moment. What is written in the fig 8?

OK, I made additional tests. Here are the results and please help who can.
DW - driver side wheel
PW - passenger side wheel
1. I'm turning PW forward and holding. Assistant turning DW in opposite direction - it turns freely and doesn't turn in forward direction.
2. I'm turning PW backward and holding. Assistant turning DW in opposite direction (forward), it turns freely and doesn't turn in backward direction.
So far all seems to be OK, but now weird things start happening.
3. Assistant turning DW forward and holding. I'm turning PW in opposite direction - nothing. I'm making one more sharp turn, some click sound is coming from the rear and DW (!!!) starting to move freely in forward direction! PW is locked.
4. Same story when turning in opposite direction. Assistant turning DW backward and holding. I'm turning PW sharply and strong in forward direction. Some click sound is coming from the rear and DW (!!!) starting to move freely in backward direction! PW is locked.
When I was installing No-Slip unit, I rewised instructions twice. So I don't believe that I installed it wrong.

Pulled out differential cover and made some inspections:

Has anybody experienced same problem? Do I have to machine pinion shaft holes in drivers?
Powertrax tech support sucks, it doesn't respond to my e-mails.

Mine is in an 8.2" 10-bolt. It was pretty loud when I first put it in, but didn't shake the car. When pulling into the pits, people would come up to me and tell me my rear was making weird noises.
I disassembled it when I took the rear out for the 3.73 gears (from 3.08). When I put it back together, it seemed a lot quieter. I have no idea why, because I used the same shims and all as the first time (axles were changed, though). Can't hardly hear it now.
I'm using AMSOIL Series 2000 75W90 gear lube. In my experience, it tends to quiet down rears vs. conventional 80W90 gear lube.
I never had any trouble getting ahold of PowerTrax tech support on their 800 line. But, it's been a couple of years since I last tried.
BTW, which springs did you use? I used the strip/street springs because I only drive the car on the street on the way to the strip. The street/strip springs are supposed to be quieter/gentler.

The problem was lack of quality of Powertrax No-Slip. It (to be more exact - driver) has been poorly machined. Powertrax promised to send me new drivers. Hope it will happen and solve problems...

i had a problem with mine initially, they sent me the wrong sized couplers. they sent me out new ones pretty quickly, and they service guy was pretty good. i would definately tell you to call, because they never answered any of my e-mails either.
at first it made some loud popping noises around tight corners under load. putting the clutch in around the turn helps it spin a little more freely, but you still get the ratching sound. mine also used to make the car buck if i let the rpms get too low or right after i got out of a turn. i checked the fluid and found it was a little low, so i put more in (it's 80W-90). since then it's quieted down to where i don't notice it as much and it's been taking turns better, with no popping sounds. i still get some bucking every now and then, but it doesn't even phase me anymore.
