Build up manual transmission..
Well there is a high performance trany shop close to my house, And have asked if they could built my tranny up for some nice power. They keep telling me that they dont have a estamit they can give me becouse maybe something in there is really messed up , etc, etc. Well they have also asked me if i can find a kit that i want , with the power i want it to hold, becouse there kits are way too expensive.
Were can i find a nice tranny power kit for a t5 that will hold about 450 hp? Or just any comapny that will make them for my tranny. I have reserched and havent found anything. -Eric

G-Force makes a couple different T5 kits, but I don't know how they are about pricing. They're the only choice I know of for T5 upgrades.

Tremec TKO 5 speed is another alternative..
or you can spend the extra 500$ and get a Tremec T-56 from McCleod. uses the T-5 bell housing, comes with an adapter plate to mount the trans to the bell housing, shifter, correct speedo gear, no dakota digital box needed.
its a full on plug and play application. all you need is the new cross member and shorten your drive shaft and torque arm 2".
cost new is $2,150
handles 450 hp 500lb/ft of torque, uses the Viper input shaft.
im doing this on my car now. not worth it to use the LT1 T-56 they just dont work correctly

I want to stay in the $1000.00-$1200.00 range with a clutch and a short shifter. Is there a kit out there that will give me the power i want my tranny to hold and around what my poket could handle?

Funny you should say this after talking about shortening the driveshaft......my stock driveshaft bolted right in with my LT1 T56. So did my stock torque arm. And my stock interior shifter plate. In fact, the LT1 T56 is commonly considered an easier swap than the aftermarket T5 replacement version. And yes, it is factory rated at 450ftlb for the 94-97 version. In fact, the only thing I can think of that ISN'T a direct bolt-in, is the speedo hookup.
IMO, the only real advantage to the aftermarket T56 is the fact that you can use 3rd gen style clutch parts (which are a bit cheaper than LT1 parts.)

You will not have a transmission however that will hold up to the power levels that a stock T56 will hold up to. If your trans. is not broken and you do not have to do anything now, I would definitely recommend saving your $ and waiting and doing the T56. Parts will be easier to find than a G-force T5, and cheaper, and it's a legit 450+ft-lbs trans. with zero upgrades.
450hp: Go for the T56. Bolt-on 305: Rebuilt T5. That's my opinion and I've run & installed enough of them to feel confident in steering you that way.

The 2.97 first gear T56s are rated at 400lb-ft, and where you got 500 from, I don't know. Even the Z06 vette (2.97 first) box is rated at less than the standard C5 vette (2.66 first) T56. It's not a Viper input shaft either, because the tooth count for the teeth on the input are different than the Viper.
As far as the LT1 T56 not working correctly... yes they do, other than speedometer provisions. BTDT.

I dont want to go t56 to much money for me. I drive my car every day, andwant to stay with my t5 if i can built it up for around my price range. There has to be a company out there that makes rebuilt power trannys out there for my tranny. Any one now another? I if i end up waisting as much money building up my t5 then i guess i will go for the t56, but there is no way that a t5 will cost more money to built up than a t56.

as long as yyour case is good the G-force kit (all the internals) runs about 1,300 bucks...
MY tranny guy has built OVER 100 of these and NOT ONE has failed....more then a few are in cars OVER 600 Hp...
the complet tranny out the door WITH A SHIFTER is about 1,900...
The tranny is rated 600/600
this is the way im going....nothing else involved but taking out the tranny and putting it back in twice as strong...

there are 2 guys in OC that have done the LT1 T-56 swap. and their re-occuring problems are burning through numerous clutches, speedo problems, ect.
also on the LT1 you have to modify the floor pan by hacking it 2" for the shifter to fit... not so on this one.
yes the drive shaft and torque are are the same size as our stockers, thats about the only advantage.
and yeah i know "McCleod" doesnt manufacture these.. Tremec does, read my post i say this already. McCleod supplys the addapter plate, they use Viper input shaft, and the viper steel forks as well. they COME WITH the proper gear for speedo already installed and come with a shifter.
we did this swap at Don's shop on thursday.. its a lot heavier than a T-5, but it went in very very easily, all we did was install the cross member, then plug in the sensors, bolt it up.. done
i bought a 02 aluminum drive shaft that was shortened 2" at a shop, rebalanced.
you also forget that the LT1 has a 50% overdrive in 6th gear.. Dons son has a 97 LT1 T-56 and cant even use 6th gear until he gets to 85mph, RMPS will drop down too far to get any power.
the Tremec from McCleod is 20% overdrive in 6th.. making it a lot more streetable to use

Maybe the guys who keep burning through clutches ride them out too long?? If you keep the stock gearing you REALLY have to slip the clutch to get the car moving....that would contribute to burned up discs I would think. Did the 2 guys change the gears in the rearend when they swapped tranny's? Do they know how to drive a stick? How much did you pay for that driveshaft? Mine was free.

Trans swap
I guess I need to throw my $.02 in here.
I have done both swaps and the camaro trans swap is a real pain. You do have to change the hydraulics, cut the floor, buy a speedo conversion, and put up with a lousy pull type clutch,2.66 first gear,50% overdrive in 6th (bad w/large cam) in conclusion the only thing good is the stock tq, arm and drive shaft fit.
the Tremec t-56 has the 2.97 1st and .20 in 5th ... .38 in 6th comes w/the drive gear in place already and excepts the stock speedo parts.
Because I have done both I prefer the latter.

I really like that the g-force tranny holds that much, and is so cheap. I guess i will be going with that tranny. Like i have noticed going with a t56 of any year is a little head ach. But a bigger one with a t56 of a lt1.

I dont do non of that crap that ricers do. You no that power shifting was proven to give you less times and lose power . Any ways i have never done those thing to my exsisting tranny, and i dont think i will. -Eric
