Torque Converter Shorter than stock

I got a used rebuilt tranny for my 305 to 350 swap. I thought that I was all done intill the tranny did not work. I ended up finding the problem, the TC that came with the tranny was about 1/2 inch shorter that stock, so when bolted to the flex plate it was pulled out a bit and disingaged it from the tranny oil pump. I am in the prosses of getting longer bolts and using washers to space it out. Is this a good idea? I have already have it most the way done but I need one more washer or so on each bolt.

spacers will work ,but must all be the same thickness .tolerance of 001 to 002"maximum between them .also verify that thew convertor to crank pilot is still engaged or youll break the pump.

the front side of the converter has a round pilot that is indexed in the crank. Same idea as a pilot bearing / input shaft in a manual trans. Again, if you're spaced out too far, this will fubar the pump.

So the crank piolt is the thing in the middle that fits in to the center of the flexplate?

Really. That is what happened then. How can that break the pump though?

Well, as you saw the tq. converter has 2 lugs going into the pump to drive it. Not having it fully engaged is like trying to drive a screw with a screwdriver not fully inserted into the head of the screw. Something's gotta give, and the runout allowed by the converter wobbling around breaks the pump.
