Cheaper tremec??Idea..

Hey guys I was looking and realized that the tremec transmissions for the mustangs are alot cheaper then for our cars. Now after alot of looking the only difference i can see between the two is that the input shaft in 10-spline on the stang and 26-spline on our cars. the output shaft is 28-spline regardless. Now I have a hayes clutch and was going to change the disc anyways. Our cars take a 10.5/ 1 1/8 /26spline clutch, but they sell a 10.5/ 1 1/8 / 10-spline disc I could buy for 86 dollors. So I figure I can buy the Ford trans, the adapter plate for the bellhousing and the yoke and clutch disc and it would work right?? Is there anything I am overlooking here?? thanks guys

you may have to check the input pilot bushing too, we put a tremec in one of our malibus, that was a conversion trans. i dunno if the case was cast specifically for a gm, but it bolted to the bellhousing. i think they put a different bearing retainer in the front, and thats what made it work, but we needed to put a special pilot bushing in the crank, that sat in the larger, outer step in the end of the crank. If you have a 1 piece seal, I dunno if that still is the case.

you have to use a special u-joint to combine the ford output yoke to the chevy driveshaft.

if you have an adapter plate, everything else pretty much works.

we built a custom crossmember, using a ford trans mount.

Isn't there something about the shifter location that makes it not a straight fit? I seem to remember something to that effect...

shifter location,

weaker (fewer spline) input shaft

different slip yoke & u-joint

different trans. to bellhousing pattern

different input shaft pilot bearing index

different input shaft length

driveshaft probably needs length changed

If you like spending a grand to save a hundred, buying the wrong transmission is for you. It's the gift that keeps on giving... headaches.

Also,

does the fork work on the ford throwout bearing?

does the speedo cable hookup work?
