Borg Warner 9-bolt rear end
I know a guy that is selling a Borg Warner 9-bolt rear end with 3.27 gears, posi, and a disc brake setup. It has about 8000 miles on it after a rebuild and was used on an 89RS.
I can get it for under $400 because he's parting out his car.
I know next to nothing about rear ends as far as quality. Is this a good rear end for a 92RS 305TBI car? I might put in an LT1 so will this rear end hold up?
Also, is changing this rear end from stock extremely difficult or is it a day job?
Lastly, am I getting a good deal on this? thanks in advance

9 bolts are BAD @ss! very strong...just hard to find parts for or expensive to rebuilt. WHen TA performance gets their act together and get the rear end girdle made......the 9-bolt would be even more solid. As an owner of a 9-bolt...... i LOVE it:rockon:

like Trickster said "While you're at it get the speedo gear and VSS out of the transmission, you'll need it if you want your speedometer to work right."
Hope that helps.

You will need those to calibrate your speedometer to the transmission so that your speedometer will accurately read your speed. Otherwise your speedometer might be reading 55 and the cop pulls you over and says you were doing 75.
Here is a picture of it. Also make sure that your tires are also of a size that matches your new rear end or it will also throw the speedo off.

Do you have disk or drum brakes now?If you have drum brakes now then you'll need to buy a new proportioning valve. You can only get them at the dealer.I just did the swap and the new valve cost 108 bucks.

Yes I do have drum brakes now, and my friend mentioned something about that valve. Are you sure you can only get it at the dealer? If you tell me what exactly it's called I can see if ebay has it.
Do you happen to know anything about the speedo gears and getting all that calibrated?

Well you run the chance of getting a proportioning valve that's stripped or something at a junkyard. You don't want to skimp on something like brakes. It's only 108 bucks.I forgot, you also have to switch the master cylinder. The piston bore is bigger for disks.I think for drums it's like.75 and disks are 1.00.You'll be happy with the swap.It only took me a day and a half to do by myself.
Whatever. Thats your preference to not buy used parts. If it were me, I wouldnt spend a 100 dollars on it. I would go to the junkyard. You could buy 20 of them for 100 dollars. I am sure they would be good. And how can you not tell if something is stripped? If you take the lines off, you can re-tighten them to check? Its a matter of preference, and I prefer to spen my $$ on parts that go fast. Its not an issue of safety. Used parts are just as good.

I agree that some parts from the junkyard are a good deal but if he is going to spend the money on the rear end and take the time to swap it then why not do it the right way and just put in a new valve? It is a preference and you'd think that with something like brakes you wouldn't want to just stick in a junkyard piece. If He was buying some interior pieces or something then I would say go to the junkyard. When I did my swap the valve stripped but the line felt like it was in all the way and you couln't see any of the threads being bad but it wa still stripped.Hey chomp,do what you feel is best for your budget and safety. It's your car and your money.I hope everything turns out.Good luck.
