How do i UNLOCK the TCC in 2,3,4th? sorry it's so long..
How do i UNLOCK the TCC in 2,3,4th? sorry it's so long..
I have a Jeep Wrangler with a 305 TPI motor, and a 700R4.according to the #'s on it it's a 89 tranny i believe..i can look again if it will help..I am using the Painless wiring harness but the 4 plug harness that goes to the tranny IS NOT plugged into the tranny but the tranny still locks the converter as soon as it shifts into 2,3 or 4th.i mean as soon as it shifts the converter is locked, and will not unlock..
The guy i got the Jeep from just had the tranny rebuilt,so i think the rebuilder did something internally to make it always lock up in 2,3,4 without any electronics.Whcih is stupid cause the tranny harness with the square plug is right there.it's just not hooked up..
Is it possible he put a check ball behind the solenoid? ansd that is causing it? or is there something else that could be done to do this?
How can i UNDO this? it is annoying to say the least.the jeep is on 35's and it shifts violent when it goes out of first.to the point of barking the tires every time almost..And if i pull it down into 3rd while driving around town to help keep the RPM's up a little when i slow to a stop it downshifts VERY hard.but doesn't downshift hard if i leave it in OD..
Also when it shifts it just pulls the motor way down,to the point of almost boggin the motor..
I would like for it to lock up in 4th like it is supposed to do.but not in 2nd,or 3rd.
One last thing it does is if i am cruising say 55 MPH in OD and slightly let off the gas.the RPMS climb way up till i push the gas pedal down a little more.then it falls back into OD..Could this be because it wants to unlock the converter but with whatever he did internally makes it stay locked? and it is kind of in neatral..or maybe even 3rd??
I am getting used to just leaving it in 3rd now.untill i go to stop then i put it back up into 4th so it won't throw me though the windshield when it downshifts..lol..
Also now after driving it more it seems the lockup clutch in the converter is slipping.
Hopefully this made sense..i really would like to fix this..and VERY VERY sorry for the long first post..i just figured someone would have the answer for me on here since the 3rd gens had the 700R4 fo most the years..
Thanks alot
Steve

I first would check the TV cable adjustment and see if its too tight or too loose.....too loose can make the tranny slip due to low line pressure and then pull into gear......were as when too tight it will have too much line pressure and shift pretty hard....this can be damaging.......but if thats not the case than I would maybe check the wiring under the pan of the trans. and look for broken wires grounding on the trans. or something along that perspective......
I did try TV adjustment and it didn't make any difference..As for a wire..the tranny has no wires hooked up to it at all.The square plug that normally hooks into it is not even plugged up and the TCC is locking in 2,3,4...I did try to plug the square 4 plug up and it didn't make any difference when i drove it..I have been trying to get ahold of the guy that built the tranny, but i haven' had any luck..

I know you don't have it connected.....I stated to check the wiring UNDER the pan for the lock-up control.....these wires could be damaged and need replacement......all it takes for the TCC to lock up is a negative (-) or grounded signal to start the lock-up......so if you have some damaged wires they may be grounded or grounding on the transmission case or valve body at all times......just pull the pan and you'll see the wires I am talking about......just look them over.....remember that there are wires inside the tarnny as well as outside.....check the internals....

The solenoid is activated when it is supplied a ground. It still needs +12VDC to complete the circuit... It shouldn't be locking up if there is not connector plugged into the transmission. If it is, the only thing that could be causing it is a plugged solenoid (whether intentionally caused or not).

yes after talking to a local trany shop it seems the solenoid is either clogged shut or was intentionally made to not open..
So tomorrow i will pull the pan down and pull the solenoid and see if i can blow through it.if not then i'll replace that and see..
Thanks for all the help

Just to update for future references. The TCC solenoid had a 1/4" check ball installed before the solenoid. So it wouldn't allow any fluid to even get to the solenoid for it to bleed off..I pulled the solenoid down to replace it and the check ball fell out.So i blew through the solenoid and it wasn't clogged.I put it back up in there and drove it..Works like a champ..
