Do torque conveters "go bad" ? Bad vibration.....

Hello all, I have a problem here that may or may not be trnsmission related.....

My 86 T/A , w/700R4, while either going down the road, or at a stand still , has a BAD vibration fron 1500-2800 RPMs

I sure seems like its balance related.

Car runs & "seems" to shift ok, and I'm just wondering if the TC could "go bad" I guess ?

I guess I could slide the trans back some & slide the TC off & restart it,

Anyone have a similar problem in the past ?

Yep. Back off the converter & check it.

I'm having a very similar problem. I "tested" the TC by going the speed that it occurs in (any speed that the rpms are around 1800-3000 rpm), put it in neutral, shut the engine off, waited a few seconds, turned ignition off to verify the engine was no longer turning. The vibration was still there with the engine off. It got no better, no worse. Doing this stops the torque converter from turning (i assume) so i basically ruled out the TC. However, i still have the vibration in park while reving.

When the TC is removed, how would i go about checking to see if it's good or not?

Remove your inspection plate. Remove the 3 bolts holding the converter onto the flywheel. Then slide the converter back into the tranny housing. Now start the car and see if the vibration is still present. If its not chances are your converter is the problem.

I backced off the converter. The vibration isn't as bad but is still present. Particularly at 2250 RPMS. Should i be looking for a miss or something, bad balancer, Flywheel?

Well, the flywheel is warped. I'm guessing that can cause a vibration.

3gc.....

How did you notice the flywhell was warped ? Was it visibly bent ? I'm have the exact problems you are, but this is a bad vibration.

This is a great forum.

I put the car on jack stands. Remove the ecm fuse and with the inspection cover off look at the flexplate and have some one crank it over. If it's warpped you could see it wobble.
