posi and gears

I have a buddy with an '88 TA in which he just dropped a warmed up 350 in. I'm just looking for a few opinions to help with his gear selection. The motor has a crane cam with lift@ .454/.480 with like a 272/282 dur. or pretty close i think, a stage2 750 cc q-jet from jet, edelbrock rpm 2.02,1.60 heads, edel. rpm intake and a well worked over 700r-4. I was telling him to go for some 3.73's but we were also pondering on 3.42's....I would appreciate any positive opinions based on his engine specs.

What's his ACTUAL duration ar .050 of lift? Roughly speaking the 3.73's sound like they'll be optimum, that's of course assuming a actual duration in the 230 range complimented with a 2800 stall.

the adv. duration of the cam is 272/284 but the duration @ .050 lift is 216/228.

That's changes everything 3.42's would be optimum with a 2000-2500 stall.

As for opinions on his combo, it should make for a fun torquey stoplight to stoplight ride. Would've like to see more actual duration, but it should still be a fun car.

Thanks IHI, for a while we thought the 3.73's would be a bit of overkill but we weren't quite sure.

what kind of times would you expect him to pull if he drives it well?

Honestly if he hooks & depending on the weight of the car I would venture to guess mid to high 13's.

He's really got the right parts to make a strong runner, after he gets bored with this set-up a larger cam-not stupid large either-will really compliment the rest of the components he has. Seems that's the weak link right now in that combo...and your altitude.
