T5 From a 4 Speed

I have an 82 Camaro with a v6 and 4 Speed. I would like to replace the v6 with a 350 and change the 4 speed to a t5. Will a t5 from an 88 camaro work?

Yes.

But you'll need the trans, bell housing, cross member, hydraulics, pedal assembly, shifter, and some other stuff. Basically, a donor car, plus drilling some holes.

The trans by itself won't just swap in. At least, not swap in and work.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I have a question... what about going from a T5 to a T10 4-speed? Its in an '83 Z28, and the T10 is from an '82 Trans Am.

Just to clarify my question a bit... I'll be getting everything I need to bolt up the T10 (driveshaft, bellhousing, clutch linkage, etc) but I won't be getting the crossmember. Will I need the 4-speed crossmember, or will my T5 one work?

Well, I know a little bit about this--I put a '91 T5 into my '82 that had a 305, not a V6--took out the automatic. Everything interchanges well; I think if you have a 350 and a T5 and all related parts, especially a parts car that has been running with this combination, you'll have everything you need to put it into your car.
Probably the biggest problem will be replacing your '82 mechanical clutch linkage with the later hydraulic setup--but it's really not a hassle. Some members have switched their mechanical linkage setups to hydraulic just to make it more dependable. You'll have a question as to where to cut a hole in the firewall to mount the clutch master cylinder--but if you look at your '82's firewall there's already a stamped place to make the cutout, as if they were planning on going to hydraulic. And if you have a parts car with the hydraulic setup you can just copy what's there into your '82--it's a lot easier to do than to describe.
Now, you'll need advice from someone more knowledgeable than me as to replacing the V6 with a V8--I bet they interchange just by changing the motor mounts but I'm not sure.

SWEEEEET! I'm doin a similar swap, except my original tranny was a 700R4. What are ALL of the parts I'm gonna need to go to the T-5?? I know I need the bell-housing, slave-cylinder and pedal cluster, but what else? (all I got is the tranny and shifter)...THANX!

Well, I gotta go to work right now, pulling over a mile of mud to get to the pavement, but I'll check again tonight to see how much info you've been given. That place near you, thirdgen source or something, has a good tutorial on their website on this swap.

OK--As RB83L69 said, you'll need the trans, bell housing, clutch fork, a flywheel, clutch cover and disc, throwout bearing, master and slave cylinders, hydraulic line and a pedal assembly. Somebody right now in "classifieds" is advertising a complete swap kit for sale from a '91 V8 car--that's the way to go if you can--or find a donor car. If you can't find a donor car or the advertised swap setup, get the above listed parts to begin. The flywheel should be new or resurfaced (quite a selection is available), the clutch and pressure plate new, a new throwout bearing (should come with the clutch kit) and maybe a new clutch fork and pivot ball--they're cheap. It's said that you can get a master and slave cylinder assembly, pre-bled, from GM for about $100--check it out. People say it's getting hard to find a good used T5 because they've been largely used up and superceded by the T56--but ask Tom at TKOPerformance (BigRedK5Blazer@aol.com) about this--he rebuilds and upgrades them.
When you've dropped out your automatic and bolted up the flywheel, clutch, bell housing and tranny and have cut your hole in the transmission tunnel for the shifter, you'll need to take out the old pedal assembly with the one big brake pedal and put in the new pedal assembly with both the brake and clutch pedals. Some folks find installing the pedal assembly the hardest part because some of the bolts are considered a bit hard to get to; but take your time. When you actually start doing it people on this web site will keep you going.
Then you'll need to make a hole in your firewall about 1 1/2" diameter to mount the clutch master cylinder--great controversy here as to location but really pretty simple--hook up your pedals to the brakes and clutch, mount your torque arm to the back of the tranny, install your driveshaft and fill the tranny with lubricant and you're ready to go. Each step will take some figuring and putting the interior back together took me about two hours, the heater controls, stereo and everything attached to the console but, man, is it worth it. If you like to drive a V8 rear wheel drive car with a stick shift transmission the thirdgen F body can't be beat--boy is it fun. I'm an old man and here I am watching for the cops...
When you hit the T5 v. T56 question just ask.

I am not sure of the type of 4 Speed. It was originally an automatic. it had been converted to the 4 speed before i bought it.
