simple answer is that a shift kit recalibrates the tranny to shift faster and more efficiently. i dont know a whole lot about trannys but mine had a shift kit in it when i bought it and it rips through the gears

a shift kit will improve your shifts and extend the life of your transmission because it reduces clutch slippage in the transmission with its firmer shifts ....it will also reduce transmission temps

In my opinion and others, Trans Go is the only way to go.

Another vote for Trans Go.
I have the Trans Go shift kit, .500" boost valve, and the Vette servo. This along with a rebuilt transmission is a nice thing to have.

Are B&M shift improver kits really that bad for the money? I would like to try one on my daily driver (91 RS tbi). It already gets pretty loose in the rain, i"m not looking to race it. I just want to make it more fun to drive, and maybe catch second.

Having ridden in a car equipped with both kits I will STILL recommend the Trans Go kit over B&M any day of the week. The B&M was harsh, ALL of the time. Part throttle, full throttle. It was a nasty ride the whole time.
However, the trans go kit is WAY different. At part throttle its still firmer, but nowhere near as harsh. But open the throttle all the way and it shifts very fast, not jerky at all.
The Trans Go kit is just better.

Depends on what you like. I like the hard shifts all the time, I like my B&M. But I also run a th350. In a 700 I think Iwould probably run a Trans-go, but I dont think there is anything "wrong" with a B&M kit.

That seems awefully cheap, are you sure thats not just the "corrective" kit, instead of the actual kit with instructions?
I haven't seen them go for less than $100, ususally $125 if you get the shift kit, video, .500" boost valve, and Vette servo.

Go to http://www.700r4l60e.com/store/custo...&cat=28&page=1 this will give you the nice part throttle shifts, and firm WOT shifts. The B&M kit does not address the inherent problems (or any other problems for that matter) of the 700R4 transmission. The Trans-Go Shift kit & Performance Shift kit address the drawbacks to these units , & will solve them for the particular applications. You can "fine tune" these kits once you know what you are going to do exactly.

I think the intermediate/reverse boost valve, and the 1-2 accumulator.
I ended up getting both of those with my setup and I'm not sorry I did. When someone rides in my car and I don't get on it, they don't know that anything is modified in the transmission. I took my father for a ride in my car and just tooling around town he though I did something wrong with the shift kit. It feels just the slightest bit firmer and faster at part throttle. But when I got further into the pedal it started shifting harder and faster till there was a very noticible difference between the stock and modifed shifts.
I'm really happy with my shift kit.
