Convert from stick to 700r4

Hi Guys,
I just got my hands on a rebuildable core. This 700r4 was not originally from an F-body. My question is, besides needing a new tailshaft, will I also have to change the output shaft, to install this unit into a third-gen. thanks ..Tom

Not really on topic, but what cubic inches does a 7.2 come out to? 502? That thing must be a beast!

Well Floorguy, for one, my big toe is constantly getting stuck between the clutch and brake pedal. Second I have a hook for a hand on my right arm,(just like the pirate on peter pan). And third, the cost of clutch fluid for my slave cylinder just went up again...

why do you need to change the tail shaft if its out of a caprice? Is it because of the length?
(i know stupid question)

That Tremec was for sale on the TGO classifieds, but went nowhere, so I got rid of it on E-Bay. My 700r4 will be self built also. Well not actually, I am going to assist in the rebuild, when FloorGuy does the overhaul, but I still consider it self built, since a trans. shop wont be doing the work....Tom

That's how I did it. I took it over to my Dad's house and we rebuilt it together. He tore it apart, and I put it together under his supervision.

When we tore it apart he asked me "Why are you rebuilding this? It looks like new!" He wasn't to enthused about it at first, but when I told him my plans for the 355 he said jokingly, "I'll see you and this tranny next year".

i dont know what shipping would be, but i have 2 700R4s just sitting here if you want the whole thing...

that would probly end up being cheaper/easier then rebuilding a non-Fbody one to work.

as to the answer to your question... i donno.

id assume the output shaft would be a diffrent length, since the tailshaft is diffrent... but again, ive never done it, so i dont know.

Thanks for the info. Ive got a good rebuildable trans., at a great price. The trans is a 91, and has an aux valve body. I already have some things for the rebuild. The tail housing is what I really need. Im about ready to check a few trans shops. On the other reply, I hope my trans holds up a little longer than a year. Thats a big task for you and your dad to do. When my dad was still alive, and I was about 20 years younger, we tore apart a TH350. After that we scrapped it. We just wanted to see the internals. Ive always said, there is nothing I wont fix on a car, except, an auto trans, but now with the help of my good friend, FloorGuy, we are gonna dive in. Should be a great learning experience....Tom

I think Brutalform should take up the generous offer regarding the 2 700r4's. No way will a 700 hold up to the power of a 434. I suggested a th 350 but he would not listen. Tom, if you are listening, grab those 2 trannies. You are gonna need um!!!

It should.

My Dad is not a performance guy. He was a Detroit diesel, EMD, Allison tranny and gas turbine mechanic.

I think mostly Dad was just giving me a hard time since I beat the crap out of the tranny in the first car I had. But that was almost 20 years ago, and I have gotten lazy and don't like to have to fix cars any more.

I mean come on, I got 882 heads! I am not going to frag that tranny!

He saw all the chrome on my 355, and I told him all that I modified on the car, and all he could see was future scattered tranny parts.
