If you have a decent amount of mechanical experience, then you could probably manage it yourself IF you don't have to reshim the pinion. If, however, you install the new posi, and your gear wear pattern sucks, then having someone with differential experience helping you will be necessary.

Either way, you will need an impact to unbolt the old ring gear (remember-left hand threads!), and torque wrench to reinstall it, and also for torquing down the main caps.

Having a drum rear will make pulling the axles easier. Also, be perpared to find that the differential cross shaft retaining bolt/pin is broken (if you like doing burnouts), in which case you will need a new one, along with the extraction tool kit (which is cheap).

Also, you will need new carrier shims because the old cast shims WILL break when you try to reinstall them. You can get a set of trick adjustable shims from ebay for like $20. I have purcheased two sets off ebay, so I know they are there. They are the best thing to happen to differentials since hypoid gears!

What extraction kit are you talking about? If there is one, I need it. Mines broke. Where Can I find one?? Here's what mine looked like when I attempted to take my one-wheel peel rear axle out. I gave up and threw it back together :

Sorry about this MonteMan357, My intent isn't to screw up your post, I plan to do exactly what you're doing and ran into the problem described above. I hope your install goes smoother than mine. Good luck with it!!

provided you got the correct series carrier all you need to do is swap the ring gear to the replacement carrier check contact pattern and back lash and you're all set. try searching i think someone else ask this same question before.

Yes, there is a removal kit. I got mine from snap-on, but it is made by somebody else, like Lisle or something. It comes in a long plastic tube about 20" long. There is a long semi-flexible drill bit, a threaded insert/guide for the drill bit, an easy out, and instructions. This kit works awsome, that pin will be out in no time.

You can try going to sears, I think the sell it in the tool section. Or you can try napa or autozone or something. Worse comse to worse, I will mail you mine so you can use it, then just mail it back to me when you are done. My email is fisherbody86@hotmail.com. Email me if you need my kit.

Hey Matt, change your sig....it's .030 over not .30 over which would be impossible on an SBC. Probably just a type-o

Which rear did you end up buying?

HHmmm, never even noticed the .30 over . I bought that rear out of an '85 IROC with an auburn posi and 3.73's. It seemed the general consensus was the 4.11's were way too low of a gear so I bought this one. Now I have to find a set of calipers if i dont get the LS1 brakes. Do you have your new rear and everything back together?
