you need to knock out the roll pin located on the shaft (little hole on the block of metal the shifters ball end sits in)

Did you take the tailshaft housing off yet? Everything is tied togther in a T5 because of the internal rail shifter. You've got to take the shifter off, then drive the roll pin out of the shifter detent (the thing that the ball on the bottom of the shifter rides in). Then remove the detent, but be careful not to lose the ball and spring that sit inside it. Once the detent is removed unbolt the tailshaft housing and remove it too. Then the top cover with the shift mechanism will just lift right off.

Yeah, that's true. You've got to clear the case to get the forks out.

well guys i took it to a specialist. he looked at it and couldnt find anything wrong with it. the only thing he said was that i could put new synchros in. now im stumped. when the tranny was in the car. it would make a noise in second gear but not in any other gears. im taking it to another specialst to get a second opinion. if you guys have any suggestions please let me now. hate hearing noises that dont sound good. oh and the car would drive smoothly no bucking or anything.

If it shifts fine then I wouldn't mess with the synchros. If it's just 2nd gear the only thing I can think of that's second gear specific is there is a small cagged needle bearing inside the gear between the bore in the gear and the mainshaft. If that's worn out it could be causign your problem. Why that bearing would go and no others is anyones guess. If the countershaft bearings were bad you'd hear the noise in every gear. If a sychro was bad there'd be a noise in 1st gear too. That's about all I can think of without actually seeing the trans.
