How does this posi look?

Ok, I have been looking at posi units and I found this and I want to know what you guys think of them. I know it's 26 spline, and I know my 86 10 bolt should be a 26 spline as well. But what I cant figure out, is whether it is a 2 or 3 series carrier. My RPO codes say it's got 3.23 gears in it right now, and with the posi change I would either keep those or go for a 3.42 set.

So I guess what I am asking is:
1) does that posi look any good?
2) will it work for my application?
3) What else would I need to complete the install?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but I have zero experience with rearends. And I would be installing this in the shop at school, under teacher supervision.

spring and clutch type is by far the best design.also beware of cone types as they are not repairable as the the spring and clutch type

That would work for you, but I would not go wild in the bidding. That price is now borderline, I wouldn't bid on it.

Hmm ok I'll hold off. What about going to the yard and trying to find a g80 from a truck or something, and then rebuilding it? (or just using it as-is if it checks out OK)

If you don't know what you're doing, you'll end up with something that doesn't fit. It's good that you're aware of the spline count thing: that's the easiest thing to get hosed by.

That 2nd Eaton would be OK, better than the Grenade-Lock in the first ad. Still not a really good unit though.

Here's what the later Auburn ones looked like. These come with either plain springs (most stock ones) or yellow ("high-perf") or orange ("Pro"). I believe you can add springs to them to make them more hooked up but I'm not sure of that. They're rebuilable in theory; but last time I called Auburn looking for parts, they were no longer selling them.

Notice how in this one, there's a bunch of little springs inside; this is one of the better stock ones.

Oh, ok. That clears it up a bunch. I dont really want a super high quality one, because I really dont have the money. That's why I am just looking for something fairly cheap and fairly reliable that I can use. And I dont know if I quite understand the 2 vs 3 series carrier thing yet. Does that only mean what gears you can use? I have 3.23 gears right now, and I dont think I would ever go higher than 3.73, so I want a 3 series, right?

Oh, and say I buy something like that seciond one on ebay.. what else will I need to install it?

2 series carriers fit 2 series gears; which are 3.08 and down, in this particular model of rear end. 3 series carriers fit 3 series gears, which are 3.23 and up. The difference is in the distance from the pinion centerline, to the ring gear mounting flange on the carrier. 2 series carriers have the flange moved farther away from the pinion, since a 2 series pinion is much larger diameter than a 3 series one.

Here's a thread where I explained it in detail. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=271929

Ok after some more (much more, actually) looking, I found this one. First of all, is this an ok one? Second, are 'sure grip' ones any good? And finally, where can I get an adapter for 3 series gears on a 2 series carrier? I checked summit and jegs and couldnt find it...

Well I hate to break the news on this one, however you did say you had 3:23 (correct). if so you have a 3-SERIES GEARS abd this one is for 2-sweies gears, Sorry about that, well keep looking.

Oh, I know. That's why I asked about the adapter.
