The "double overdrive" means 6th gear is an extremely high gearing. This means low highway RPMs even with a very deep rearend. I run 3.70s in the back and turn about 1800 at 80mph on the MN6 tranny. This in turn is a big gas mileage boost if you spend any time on the highway.

a 97+ F-body T-56 would be for an LS1. I believe all but one bellhousing bolt would mate up, plus a few other differences you can read below.

'97 is still an LT1 style tranny, and will work fine. '98+ is the LS1 style, which has a different bellhousing, adapter plate, input shaft, etc. The LS1 tranny can be made to work from what I hear, but it's probably a lot more trouble than it's worth. Just stick with the '97 and older tranny....they're proven to work very well.
If you can afford to wait, then I'd wait it out for a good deal. I agree the 94-97's are the best ones to get. I see them on ebay for around $1300-$1500 + a core charge fresh rebuild. I dont come across them at the yards here locally, very rare, so not sure on yard prices. In all honesty, I'm one of those guys that prefers a built T5 because its cheaper in the long run (considering the parts needed for a T56 swap). So I didnt really actively go after any T56 deals, but I did wait it out and a good deal found me. I decided to go for it, so I'll be converting my 91 Z28 to T56 soon. A friend decided to part with all his 3rd gen stuff which included a '94 T56 with 40k miles, OEM flywheel/bellhousing/master slave cylinder/clutch/brake pedal assembly, then the spohn crossmember and torque arm 3rd gen conversion kit, and the Mcleod pressureplate/clutch disc set. Complete crazyness. Really cheap too, under $1000. I'm also thinking about going with an aluminum flywheel.

lol, thats the kinda deal i would love to get! lol, otherwise, it will be next year.. i'll just NOT spend the money on a shift kit or new torque converter for the r4..... cause i want the t56 really bad... for manual and for the double overdrive..
