Cuz mine does all the time w/o fail and the tires have decent tread left. Because it has 2.73 gears I wouldn't think that is possible w/o a shift kit.

Well if yours does isn't your question answered? It doesn't mean you have a shift kit though.

Tranny pressure ?

Lots of variables, if it runs good, so be it

My original gears(2.73) used to chirp the tires as well.

Now with the 3.42's, it's even better.

No, because we're going off my own car, not every else who an Lb9/2.73 car. So if everyone says 'yes it will stock' then I know I don't have a shift kit. IF they say 'No it won't stock' then I know it does. That's what answers my question.

But what did you mean by "It doesn't mean you have a shift kit though"? Could it be a cam or torque converter?

When I added my shift kit (after the gear swap) made the chirping even easier.

The shift kit makes the shift instantaneaous(sp) instead of a smooth drawn out shift.

My L98 and 2.77 rear does not chirp second with the stock tranny. It shifts pretty damn firm at WOT but not tire breaking hard.

Same here. Back when I still had the stock drivetrain. L98/2.77 , firm shifts, no where NEAR chirpin' second.

Less power, slightly taller gear (basically the same), identical trans.....I'd say a Lb9 would NOT chirp into 2.

.....but I've heard it ALL here on TGO

If I were to look inside the tranny pan, would it be obvious that there is a shift kit? Would it say Trans-Go right there or do the shift kits look like the GM peice?

Typically firm shifts with a chirp are seen with a shift kit. However, that doesn't mean you have one. Your tires could be the cuplrit or you could have a power upgrade as you suggested.

All a shift kit is, is a new gasket for between the valvebody and tranny, some check *****, a drill bit and some instructions. There are other kits (Transgo) that come with springs and few other goodies as well but to answer your question, no. You cant just visually check and see if it has a shift kit.

depends on the tires too but, if you guys with l98 cars arn't getting that firm of a shift perhaps your trans was swaped out? weak acumulator spring, these cars are very old now. and any number of reasons

keep in mind it is a chirp not a big bark into second like a standard trans does

a broken acumulator spring will give a very firm shift too (like a shift kit)

I can't count the number of stock L98 i've driven, and I've never seen one chirp 2.

I'm not saying what will or won't happen, and I'm not there, so I can't speak for anyone elses car, but the guy asked a general question. TGO is NOTORIOUS for this kind of thing.

Does your car chirp second? Maybe it does, but I think it's fair to say that most won't.

Ive driven in three other L98's (one was a G92 also) and the only one to bark second had a shift kit.

I've driven a stock L98 car with 3.73's, had to play with the throttle right to get it to bark 2nd if you know what i mean.

my stocker tranny used to chirp second going around turns alot (creeping) but i have a locker. did it with the 3.73's as well as the 4.10's. 700r4's were notorious for having a ridiculously frim part throttle 1-2 shift.
