Tranny Rebuilt, now P=R R=N N=D

I had my transmission rebuilt last week, picked it up Monday and just got it finished today to find that the gear selector is off...

When the gear selector says P the car wants to go in reverse, When I select Reverse it doesn't want to go, and almost like all the selections are one off....

So what's up?? Is there a cable adjustment I am missing, or could something be messed up inside??

Please help??????

Sounds like your shifter cable is off a bit. I know you can adjust it but don't remember how honestly. I'm sure someone else will post to help.

Loosen the nut holding the cable onto the shift lever on the transmission. Put the selector and transmission shaft into neutral. Tighten the nut.

so move the connector on the trans back 2 clicks, then put the shifter in neutral, and connect them and tighten???

What really sucks is that I have to leave town and won't be back til Easter

I will let you when I get back... Thanks...

It's actually very simple. Put the shifter in Park. Loosen the nut on the linkage and move the lever as far forward as it will go then tighten the nut and you're set!

Well, I know that is what I did.. When I was under the car, I figured that was the best way...

Is it possible that it was rebuilt with something internally wrong?? I know that there was a name change from 700r4 to 4L60 in 92 could something have gotten confused...

Try it again, with the shifter in the middle of its range, like neutral. Don't let the manual shaft arm or cable move while you're tightening the nut.

No if you have forward and reverse and its grabbing the gears then your linkage is off.

When my Firebird got towed, they (they towing company)disconnected the linkage so they could stick it in neutral. When I jumped it, they had stuck it in gear when they set it down, so as soon as I started it, it sort of shuddered into gear. Quite scary when it happens, and you're not expecting it. Good thing my foot was near the brake. Easy fix (my wife was the one under the car as she fit properly and has small dexterous fingers, I worked the shifter), I'm glad I had a nut lying around that fit the bolt, as they lost hte nut then they disconnected it. Morons...

Friend of mine says his '91 RS is stuck in reverse. I asked him if the shifter felt really 'light' or just plain abnormal. It does, so I'm going to see if the linkage has somehow become disconnected over time. Maybe the nut fell off or something, and the bolt worked it self loose. I'm going over there later this week to see if that really is the problem, and I'm hoping it is, I'd hate to have him pay a butt-ton of money for a tranny rebuild.

It's stupid-scary just how easy it is to screw a buddy of yours over, with just this linkage. Takes five minutes, maybe less.

Yeah, man, scared the S out of me the first time.. And to top it off, my car got stuck at WOT during the first test drive. I guess I frayed the throttle cable when we were taking out the tranny... That was fun!!! fortunately, I recognized it right away and was just 3 or 400 yards down the road from my house when it happened and I was able to turn the car off... You should have seen it, trying to start my car in reverse with the throttle stuck at WOT. I was hauling a$$ backwards down the street and into my driveway while almost standing on the brake... It was very scary at the time, but laughable now...

If it don't kill ya it only makes you stronger..

Hey Wahiua, HI. Isn't that near an Army base on Oahu? (Not sure how I know that) My brother used to live in Kapaa on Kaua'i. Used to spend a lot of time there (Kaua'i) when I wasn't working or going to school.

Mahalo!!

Yeah, I live right across from Schofield Barracks, home of the 25th Infantry Division. I was stationed there for three years, and liked the climate so much, I stayed.

I can imagine the looks on your neighbor's faces as they saw your car, peeling out in reverse as you tried to get it back in the driveway. I've had a throttle cable break, but the throttle body just shut. That sucked. Had it been going any faster, we would've been able to hit the cruise control, but it only goes active at speeds over 25...
