How can you tell what stage posi unit you have?
I have a posi unit out of a 94 TA that some one gave me but I don't know what type of posi unit it is or what type of gears it will need. Is there a way by looking at it to find out what stage it is?
Thanks.
Thanks.

well if you want me to be on topic and serious, then i ll say you have a stage 1 posi, like the rest of us, cuz GM never designated any axles or parts with stages.

posi unit=differential carrier
stage=series
considering your the first person to get confused by this I don't feel bad.
Anywho, fbody's that received larger numbered gears stock such as 3.23, and 3.43's possibly even 3.73 received a series or "stage" 3 carrier or "posi", those who used more of a hiway gear received a series or "stage" 2 carrier or "posi"
befor trying to be a smart *** make sure you won't end up a dum ***.

ive never heard people use the term 'stage' for axle ratios. only stages i hear about are turbos and aftermarket **** like that. no need to rub it in.

I am not sure if this will help you....but
If you stick the posi on end and measure up to the ring gear mounting flange you get the following measurement (using a tape measure)
2 series = 5 1/4"
3 series = 4 7/8"
I have a picture of a 2 series and 3 series side by side but I can't get them to show
