Tranny... t56?

Hey guys, I've been looking for a new tranny... here's the story.

Currently, I'm using the stock 5spd tranny, - my centerforce clutch I'm not totally sure EXACTLY what it is.. the tranny's got 200,000kms on it with the 305, and about 20,000 with my 350, and is giving me some problems.. the clutch fork thinger is home made, because i never wanted to order the part, and now it's worn out and is giving me problems again, the release berring i feel is being a pain, too. and i'm going to have to take it in to a shop, and they're going to swap it and make a new one, which will cost about 270 for the part, and labor. lame.

A friend of mine could give me access to his garage, and help me out, like before.. but he's been super busy, and unpredictable. I don't particularly want to wait around for winter to come, to get the new tranny in just to park the car again... So i've put my foot down, and brought out the wallet. here's the damage.

I've spoken with other people, and my car specs are on the left. my plan is to be more street then strip, but i do want to hit the strip every now and then. It's not really a daily driver, i'll ride my bike before i drive it in the rain, and yeah.
I'll be getting some 275 or 285DR's, so i should be able to hook, and i don't want to worry about blowing up my tranny...

My motto is, go big or go home... heh, i dont NEED It now, and if i dont have the money, i'll wait a while and do it properly. what do you think would be wise in my case?

going with a T56? something from a viper or vette?
I'm assuming i'de have to get a new driveshaft, some SFC's to support my chassis and such?

tips, suggestions, advice much appreciated
what would YOU do? woud this stock tranny hold up to the DR's i'm going to get with my motor?

Thanks for the reply!

Where would i look into getting one? I'm up in canada, if you know any canadian shops... what are they from? I don't really know too much info about them, but that's what everyone is saying, go with a t56. why?

All i know, is that they can hold a boatload of tq, and that they're 6 speed. what else do you know about em?

where did these trannys come from? what would getting one built ring me up, and where would you suggest?

Well, they certainly don't come from a viper or a vette.

Take a look at the tech articles. My swap cost me about $2500, but i got some sweet deals.

of course they do. those ones just won't bolt in

T56's are in the new mustang cobras (with a differnet input shaft that is weaker than the GM version) vipers (with a stronger input shaft than the GM version) and corvettes (though its attached to a transaxle). its also in the Aston Martin Vanquish.

Your best bet is to get the tranny and all the donor parts from a 94-97 camaro or bird. complete conversion kits can be had for 1000-1500 dollars...sometimes more but you don't need to pay that much.

I managed to get a T56 for 900 dollars. I need pedals and clutch hydraulics as well as the U bolt that holds them in. That should cost me 80 dollars plus shipping as long as my deal goes through. A new clutch puts me at another 200-300 depending on what i go with. Probably just the LT4 pressure plate and an aftermarket disk.

Oh, i'm getting a stock shifter for free for it because it seems to be missing it but i want to get a pro 5.0 asap...so factor in another 175 heh.

Anyway total will be under 1500 since i'm making my own crossmember. i'm not sure yet whether i will mount the torque arm on my crossmember or leave it on the tranny. But i will post pics of my progress.

The t-5 won't hold up under a good amount of power with good tires. Like mentioned, get a 94-97 t-56 and a couple other things for the swap. Mine use to be an auto and I threw a t-56 in it. I haven't had much seat time cause everything is just finishing up. But like you want, I have a motor that is drivable on the street but def a beast. I also got 275 DR's... I'll see how they hook once I get exhaust.

Here I am testing out the t-56. Everything seems to be working great!

Nice man.. that's exactly what i've got planned, my DR's are on the way, 275's, large enough to get a good hook, yet small enough to street.
