With the throttle fully open, press the D-Shaped metal tab on the side. Grasp the housing of the TV cable and pull it back firmly towards the firewall. Once the cable housing has gone back as far as it can go, release the metal tab and close the throttle. Open the throttle all the way back up again and make sure it doesnt ratchet back out. Also lightly press sideways on the cable itself to make sure there isnt any slack in it. If the cables nice and tight, your good to go.

Just as a word of warning, the plastic cable clip gets real brittle after awile and it can break while your adjusting the cable. If that happens, dont be real suprised. It happened to me the last time I adjusted mine. The clip was so brittle it virtually crumbled in my fingers. Easy enough to fix, though. Trans shops sell replacements that slip on for about $5.

Off the thirdgen.org main page, click on the "tech central" link on the left... the TV re-adjust article is under the "Transmission" section. They didn't name it correctly, look for the article titled "Adjust your detent cable".

When I changed intakes, the TV cable needed adjusted since the new one intake was taller. I didn't find the tech article on TGO to be useful. So, here's the procedure that works for me.

Press and hold that D shaped button.

Push the adjustment rod with the small slots all the way back into it's housing (toward the firewall). It is the first piece of black plastic you encounter as you head along the TV cable from the throttle body toward the transmission.

Release the D shaped button.

Open throttle to WOT. You'll hear the adjuster ratchet back out to it's proper position.

Open beer. Pour beer into mouth. Repeat as necessary.

The throttle fully open procedure is the best IMO. Letting it self adjust always resulted in too little tension. You want the cable to be as TIGHT as possible at WOT.

I'm reasonably certain that my method is how GM intended it to be done. The adjuster is engineered to ratchet out like that; that's what those angled slots are all about. 24x7, you say to "make sure it doesn't ratchet back out." Why would have a ratcheting mechanism if it's not supposed to ratchet?!? What a terrible design flaw! (italics detone sarcasm)

What I described is the procedure recommended in the repair manual (less the beer part).

GM engineered this system for normal drivers in stock vehicles. Your typical 1980's camaro owner is definitely not normal, nor is their vehicle stock. People here tend to want to change their shift point using the TV cable tension. In my opinion, it's a bad idea to use the TV adjustment to change the RPM at which your car shifts.

with that adjustment that I stated above, it shouldnt ratchet out because its already set at the proper tension. If it ratchets back out, after that adjustment, then the self-adjusting mechanism is shot.

I also agree thet messing with the TV tension is also not a great idea. You want MAXIMUM tension at WOT so you have peak line pressure.

I origionally had set my transmission by using the self-adjuster and it didnt work well at all. It was one of many things that finally did the trans in. Setting it for peak tension works the best from what Ive seen and is the safest way to have it set.

I quickly sacnned throught it and it seemes like good info...I'm just nervous about touching the thing becasue it can mess up the transmission if its not set right...unfortunatley to install the shift kit i have to disconnect it and then reset it at the end...
