auto to t5 swap question
I just installed the T5 in my '87 350 tpi. The pedal setup is from an '86. I swapped out the original 700r4. My question is the shifter wiring. The top 2 wires on the shifter connector, the fatter ones, are not connected to anything under the dash??? I did a continuity check on them and they run directly to the auto shifter.
I read someones post that the next two wires are for the backup lights and the bottom 2 wires are for the ecm and should not touch together.???I did change the setting in the prom also..
Any thoughts,
Chris

The auto has a neutral/park safety switch through which the starter solenoid voltage has to go. The manual uses a clutch safety switch to do the same thing.

Correct, the yellow and purple thick wires are for the starter. You need to plug two wires into the auto-shifter connector and run them to your clutch pedal safety switch (the one on the bottom travel of the pedal, not on top!).
Hope this helps.

Not sure what you mean by the bottom travel of the pedal. I have one slide switch on the clutch pedal arm with provisions for two connectors(small). It seems like it is spring loaded when moved to the end of its travel....is this the safety switch???
The purple and yellow wires by the pedals hook up where???
and what do I do with the purple and yellow wires on the old shifter connector??

There are two switches on the clutch pedal. One on top (the one you're describing) that is used for cruise control. This switch deactivates cruise control if you touch the clutch pedal (or it should be set to do so). The other switch is activated when you FULLY depress the clutch pedal (all the way to the floor). It is there to prevent starting without the clutch FULLY disengaged.
The second switch is the one you need to wire up to the yellow and purple wires on the A/T shifter connector. Just run two wires from the A/T shifter connector down to the clutch pedal and hook them up to the correct connector on the clutch pedal.
I wish I had pictures for you.

Can i jumper the purple and yellow at the shifter connector and add the correct connectors to the purple and yellow wires that will connect to the safety switch on the pedal??

If you can't figure it out you can just connect the yellow and purple wire together. Then the car will start. But you will be able to start the car in any gear with or without the clutch pressed.
Not the safety thing.
Those two wires should run to the clutch switch you are talking about.

In another words, the yellow and purple wires that end at the A/T shifter connector need to be extended to the clutch start safety switch. If I am not mistaken, the switch is behind the pedal, by the firewall.
There's gotta be some pictures here on TGO. Try the

I'll look for some pics. My safety switch is a slider that has one end at the top of the pedal arm and the middle of the switch is actually screwed into the pedal frame. As the pedal is pushed the rod with the pad on the end moves upward and depresses a spring loaded switch to complete the circuit.
So if I take the purple and yellow wires from the A/t shifter connector and extend them to the safety switch and hook it up, the car will start....What happens to the purple/yellow wire connector under the dash...stays unplugged???

Ah, so you got some extra yellow and purple wires under the dash .... are they coming out of the pedal assembly? I don't think there should be any other yellow and purple wires in the dash.

There was a connector on the drivers kick panel that was not connected that has the same yellow and purple wires to it as to the shifter connector. I thought I read that this connector was for a manual trans.

Never found one on mine when I did the swap.
I ran wires from the A/T shifter switch.
Jump that connector under the dash and if the car starts, go ahead and use that one instead.

Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
It seems that the Firebirds have the yellow and purple wires in both places for the neutral safety switch. My 89 Formula came with the T5, but has the wiring for both switches, auto and manual.
You should be able to plug the connector nearest the clutch pedal into the safety switch - the 'slider' you described above. Just leave the ones in the console as they are.
The blue and green wires from the console connector can be run down and connect to the back-up light switch on the side of the transmission.
EDIT : You mentioned in the other thread that the connector won't plug into the switch - I've found that there are at least two different connector plug-in configurations for the neutral safety switch; you may need to get one to fit the year of your car.

I just cut off the connector near the kickpanel and wired up my own configuration. Works just fine..

Just double check that you can't start the car unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed to the floor. Starting half way through or 1" off the top would be unsafe.
Not trying to question your wiring skills or anything like that, just making sure it's done right so that your wife is safe, bud!
And BTW: good work!
